Chapter 5
I checked the time–Hector should have already left for work. Taking a deep breath, I muttered, “I’ll go back and find it now.”
Once home, I ran straight to the bedroom and started searching. I rummaged through drawers, checked under the bed, and combed through the closet. I turned every possible hiding spot inside out, yet there was nothing.
Exhausted and overwhelmed, I slumped to the floor, my thoughts spiraling into chaos.
Then, I suddenly remembered what the old woman had said- the Twin Hex insects needed blood to survive.
Gritting my teeth, I grabbed the small knife from my bag. With trembling hands, I drew the blade across my finger, opening a shallow cut.
Blood pooled quickly, dripping onto the hardwood floor. I held my breath and listened intently, waiting for any sign of movement. Before long, I heard a faint sound echoing from the wall, like something crawling.
As I turned to the source of the voice, I noticed it was coming from behind the large wedding portrait of Hector and me hanging on the wall. Even though I was terrified, I steadied myself and yanked the photo off the wall.
I gasped when I saw the jar. Inside was another fat, wriggling black bug identical to the one I had taken from Vanda.
Rage and disbelief washed over me. I could not believe that Hector–my own husband, the father of my baby–had teamed up with Vanda to destroy me. It was ridiculously cruel and
unbelievable.
Fueled by anger, I grabbed the jar and stormed out of the house. At the neighborhood entrance, I flagged down a cab and jumped in, gripping the jar tightly. Just as I was about to shut the door, I caught sight of Hector out of the corner of my eye.
He charged toward me, his face twisted in fury as he shouted, “Luna, where the hell do you think you’re going?”
Panic surged through me. I slammed the car door shut and yelled at the driver, “Sir, please just start driving! Now!”
The cab sped off. However, when I glanced in the rearview mirror, I saw Hector jumping into his car to follow us.
He started sending frantic voice messages, his tone laced with threat. “Luna, get back here! What the hell are you up to now?”
Then, another one. “Don’t even dream of running away. I’ll make sure you pay for your foolishness!”

I shuddered at the messages and immediately blocked his number. The driver glanced in the rearview mirror and asked cautiously, “Is that guy chasing you?”
I forced a calm expression, though my voice trembled slightly. “No… Just please keep driving. I’m in a hurry. I’ll even pay you double!!
Money was a powerful motivator. The driver floored it, narrowly running a yellow light. Yet, Hector was not giving up; his car was still closing in.
Suddenly, there was a deafening crash. I turned around and saw Hector’s car had collided with a semi–truck barreling through an intersection. His car flipped violently through the air before slamming into the ground with a sickening thud.
I froze, unable to process the sudden turn of events. As much as I hated him at that moment, seeing the wreck left me shaken to my core.
When I arrived back at the old woman’s place, I recounted everything as simple as I could. She listened silently, her face grim. Then, she reached into her pocket, pulling out a small black pouch.
Without a word, she took both bugs and tossed them into a cast–iron furnace. She
whispered words in a language I could not understand, her voice steady and low, as the fire flared to life.
The bugs writhed violently, making faint popping sounds as they burned. In seconds, they were reduced to ashes.
The old woman scattered the ashes and gave me a solemn look. “The bug controlling the dead fetus is gone. But now, we need to swap the babies back.”
Her tone grew heavier as she added, “You only have one day.”
