Chapter 8
Devon quickly reported, “Mr. Lundberg, I’ve hired over 100 professional divers and a thousand boatmen to scour the area from the incident site downstream, but there’s no sign of Mrs.
Lundberg.”
Shane’s tightly knitted brows finally eased. He leaned back in his chair, a scornful smirk
tugging at his lips.
“What did I tell you? She’s always putting on a show. Alright, that’s enough. Tell everyone to return. There’s no need to continue searching.”
Devon was still worried. “Even if Mrs. Lundberg didn’t commit suicide, she’s still missing.
What if”
“She’s just hiding somewhere, throwing one of her tantrums. Leave her be. She’ll return once
she’s done with her tantrum.”
After Shane hung up, he stared at the photo of us on the desk, lost in thought. It was taken when I was 17, right after we’d played tennis. The sun was shining, and I was smiling brightly.
I caught a hint of longing from his gaze. How laughable. Could he even miss the old me? He was the very person who tore that smile off my
face!
“Shane!” I heard Amber call out.
She locked the door behind her and walked right over to Shane, settling herself on his lap.
Shane tried to push her away. “Abbie, stop fooling around!”
“Didn’t you want me repeatedly last night? Clearly, you love me too, so why the proper act
now?”
She pressed her chest against his arm, her breath warm against his ear. “This used to be Allison’s room. Don’t you find that more thrilling?”
I couldn’t believe that shameless bitch was trying to taint the last untouched piece of my
world.
“Get out! Both of you, get out!” I screamed with all my might, my voice trembling with rage. But they couldn’t hear me.
There was no desire in Shane’s eyes. Instead, he appeared on guard. “Abbie, you said just one night.”
“Relax, Shane. I won’t tell anyone. You’re not losing anything here. I just missed you,” Amber said as she grabbed his hand and placed it on her chest. “Feel that? My heart’s beating so fast.”
But unlike last night, Shane pushed her away. “I still have work to do. I’m leaving.”
When Shane left, I was forced to follow. Before leaving, I glanced back at Amber. She looked more like a vengeful ghost than I did.
She murmured softly, “Oh, Shane. It’s too bad that Allison will never come back.”
Shane didn’t hear her because she spoke so softly, but I caught her words clearly by reading her lips. Amber was definitely connected to my death! She was the one who had me killed.
I
mad, wanting to pounce on her and claim her life, but I couldn’t move more than three meters away from Shane, I could only watch helplessly as that loathsome face disappeared further into the distance.
Shane started the car as I sat in the passenger seat. Watching the scenery blur past, I wondered if the person who killed me could have been a hitman hired by Amber.
No… Even though the man wore a mask, his piercing eyes felt familiar. I was certain I had seen. him before.
After I died last night, my consciousness detached from my body. Before I could identify my killer, I was already bound to Shane’s side.
That man had thrown my wedding dress into the water after killing me. But where was my body?
I didn’t understand. If he simply wanted to kill me, he could have disposed of the wedding dress along with my body.
If it was for money, the dress itself was worth millions. Even if it couldn’t be sold because it was considered stolen goods, the diamonds could have been removed and sold on the black market.
But from the evidence and the photos the police took, the wedding dress was intact except for the knife slash. So, what exactly did Amber know?
