Chapter 29
Shane had won the bid for me.
Was this fate? I couldn’t escape him even in death.
I stared blankly at the lively crowd. Was the truth of my death destined to remain unknown? I couldn’t accept it.
“One million dollars!”
Amber’s voice jolted me from my thoughts. I glanced toward the stage, where the high- definition screen displayed a scripture engraved in Sarvani script.
However, the material bearing the scripture seemed unusual. It didn’t quite look like paper.
That faint sheen reminded me of… human skin.
Human skin!
I thought back to the Erstonian man’s words about flaying me. Could he have turned my skin into a human–skin book?
With that chilling thought in mind, I pulled myself away from the rosary bracelet. My body. trembled as I took cautious steps toward the book
Sure enough, my soul could slip inside freely! This was my skin!
I broke down in anguish, though no tears fell from my eyes.
I had no idea who I had crossed paths with. That man’s cruelty was unfathomable. He wouldn’t even spare my body after death.
Noticing Amber’s interest in the book, Shane raised the bid.
Although it was blessed by a religious master, the fact that it was made of human skin. deterred most people, leaving few interested in it.
Two million dollars was all it took for Shane to secure the human–skin book. Once the transaction was complete, an attendant brought the book over.
My skin had been polished and treated with special solutions, so the cover looked smooth. The Sarvani scriptures inscribed upon it gave it an air of divine sanctity.
Yet Shane’s expression was uneasy. His brow furrowed in apprehension.
“Amber, this book is made of human skin. Even with a religious master’s blessings, it doesn’t change what it is. It feels sinister. I think it’s best to donate it to a religious place.”
Smiling, Amber said dismissively, “Relax, Shane. Human–skin books are usually made from. the skin of enlightened religious masters. Their blessings ensure longevity and health for the
owner. Grandma will love it.”
Grandma? Amber knew better than anyone how much Grandma had loved me. Yet, she planned to gift Grandina a human–skin book made from my skin?
Rage consumed me as I hurled myself at Amber. “Why wasn’t it you who died?”
However, my hands passed through her face, and she felt no pain. Instead, her with a mocking disdain.
eyes gleamed
She knew. She’d known all along that I was dead!
The auction ended as heavy snow began to fall.
Standing beneath the vast, snow–covered sky, I screamed in fury, “God, you’re blind!”
Why did I, who lived my life in kindness, have to suffer such a cruel fate while the wicked thrived? Why couldn’t I become a vengeful spirit and punish those who harmed me?
As if fueled by my seething resentment, the icy wind howled more fiercely, chilling everyone
to the bone.
“It’s so cold,” Amber said as she burrowed into Shane’s arms.
Shane pushed her away sharply. “We’re in public. Abbie!”
Amber stomped her feet. “But Shane, I’m freezing!”
Relenting, he draped his coat over her shoulders and said with thin patience, “The driver will
be here soon.”
After Amber got into the car, she reminded him with a smile, “Don’t forget it’s Grandma’s birthday tomorrow. Make sure you come early.
“I will. Be careful on the way home,” Shane replied.
Once she left, Shane climbed into his own car.
“Mr. Lundberg, are you going back to the Lundberg residence or…?” Shane rubbed his temples. “To my home. Allison should be back by now.”
