Chapter 37
That earthquake had claimed many lives, yet Shane had only suffered a minor scratch. His only loss was that wallet which was now nowhere to be found.
Only now did he realize how hard it had been to get that lucky charm.
Seeing him staring at the lucky charm, Grandma tucked it into her chest. “What are you looking at? Ally gave this to me.”
He gave a wry smile. “Mrs. Schultz Senior, you’re thinking too much. I used to have a lucky charm like this too. Anyway, I got you this holy book and locket. I hope they can help bring you good health.”
He handed the book over to her. As soon as she heard it was a holy book, her expression turned solemn as she accepted it. She examined the book with a strange expression.
“This holy book looks different from the others.”
“Yes, it was made with special materials by a high–ranking religious master. It’s been blessed, “he explained. “It will definitely help you recover sooner.”
Grandma gently stroked the cover of the holy book, and I desperately wanted to stop her. ” Grandma, no, you can’t accept this.”
I was already dead, and it didn’t matter to me. What truly concerned me was the immense sorrow Grandma would feel. She would be devastated to learn that the book was made from
my skin.
At her age, I knew she couldn’t bear such a blow. Amber knew Grandma loved me the most and was using this to provoke her.
I wish I had taken her with me to the depths of hell when I was still alive. If I could be reborn, I would dedicate my life to honoring my grandma and avenging the wrongs done to me.
I could do nothing but watch as Grandma gently caressed the scriptures in the holy book.
Maybe it was the natural bond between family, but Grandma seemed to be drawn to it. She touched it so tenderly, just like she used to when she stroked my head as a child.
I whispered over and over, “Grandma…”
Grandma put away the holy book and handed the locket back to Shane. “I’ll keep the holy book. You take this locket back. Don’t forget the promise you made. You must cherish her, love her, and protect her for the rest of your life.”
He solemnly promised. “I will, Mrs. Schultz Senior.”
His serious expression made me feel nauseated. Thanks to Amber, after giving the holy book to Grandma, a part of me could temporarily stay by her side.
Cap: 37
As night fell, Grandma placed the holy book aside and called Rebecca over. “Ally should be back soon. Bring me the dress she gave me, and help me fix my hair. I can’t let her see me looking so disheveled.”
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Schultz Senior. I’ll make sure you look radiant.‘
Grandma struggled to put on the dress and paired it with a fur coat. She looked every bit elegant and refined.
I often remarked that Grandma was a stunner when she was young, but she insisted that I was her spitting image.
Unfortunately, her body was frail, and she couldn’t stand for long, so she sat in a wheelchair. Rebecca added an extra blanket for Grandma and gently combed the silvery hair back from her temples.
“Oh, and I want to wear those pearl earrings Ally gave me.”
“Okay
Grandma’s face lit up with joy. “I think Shane still cares for her,” she said.
“Of course! They’ve known each other since they were children.”
“As soon as Ally returns, they should have a baby quickly. I want to live long enough to see her become a mother. That’s all I ask for. As long as she’s happy, I’ll be at ease.”
The snow fell ceaselessly outside, mirroring the tears I couldn’t shed.
“Grandma, please forgive me. You won’t get to see me again.”
