Chapter 42
After cutting the cake, everyone took their seats for the feast. However, Grandma excused herself to her room, saying that she felt unwell.
I returned to the scriptures and quietly waited. Soon, I heard Grandma’s voice from the doorway. “Rebecca, ask someone to see what’s going on at Gildford. I keep thinking something’s not right.”
“Mrs. Schultz Senior, are you that certain Ms. Allison isn’t the woman in the footage?”
Grandma glared at Rebecca. “I watched Ally grow up. How would I not know what kind of person she is? Even if she did fall in love with someone else, she would divorce Shane first. She would never do such a thing since she’s still marned.”
“That’s true. M Allison has rejected so many admirers all these years. She’s always been logical. Even if her love for Shane has turned into hatred, it’s unlikely that she would sleep with someone else to get back at him.“”
Grandma spoke through gritted teeth. “An old lady like me can understand such a simple theory. Yet, Shane, as her childhood sweetheart, is easily swayed by others.
“Once Ally’s back, I must make her divorce Shane. Trust is the most vital part of a marriage. If your husband can’t even trust you, what’s the point of being together?”
I began to tear up as I listened to Grandma, whose words were heartbreaking. She could figure things out clearly, but the same couldn’t be said for the man who grew up with me.
“Just secretly send someone to investigate what’s going on in Gildford. See what Ally is actually up to over there.”
“Alright, Mrs. Schultz Senior. You should wash up first and rest early. Ms. Allison might even
be back tomorrow.”
“That sounds good.” Grandma let out a long sigh before heading to the bathroom to wash up.
Although she had her medicine by 10:00 pm, her gaze was fixed on the cake she had placed on the table. In fact, she had looked at the cake many times tonight.
“Mrs. Schultz Senior, you should go to bed.”
“It’s not midnight yet. I’m waiting for Ally.” As soon as Grandma brought up about me, her gaze turned gentle.
“That Ally always liked desserts ever since she was young. I wanted to spoil her as well, so I learned cooking from a teacher to prepare delicious food for her.
“Ally was so thoughtful as well. She often dropped by my place to cook for me when it became harder for me to walk in my old age. She told me that since I raised her, she would take care of

me as I grow old.”
Grandina began crying while speaking with a smile. “Rebecca, that young lady has always been very thoughtful, so she’ll definitely return. I’m so scared that something has happened to her.
“Oh, Mrs. Schultz Senior. Ms. Allison isn’t a child anymore since she’s all grown up. What could even happen to her?
“Besides, if something really did happen, news travels really fast these days. The Schultzes would have known long ago.”
– Rebecca patted Grandma’s shoulder like she was coaxing a child. “Everything’s fine. Ms.
Allison only became upset because of Mr. Lundberg.
“Women love to throw their little tantrums. She’s afraid that Mr. Lundberg would contact her through us, so she didn’t return and purposely turned off her phone.
“She’s definitely angry at Mr. Lundberg this time. Didn’t she intentionally seek out a lucky charm for you? Ms. Allison does think of you.
That made Grandma wipe her tears away. “You’re right. Ally’s definitely not in trouble. That scoundrel! It’s time we show Shane who’s the boss!”
“That’s right. If you hurt your eyes from crying too much, Ms. Allison will feel bad.”
Grandma cast one last glance at the cake. “If she comes back, ask her to eat the cake first. I’ve purposely saved a slice for her.”
“I will. You should rest, and I’ll shut the door. I’ll let you know immediately if Ms. Allison is
back.”
Hearing their conversation made me reach out for the cake. I really wanted to have a bite, even if it was my last bite. That was Grandma’s wish.
My fingers kept going right through the cake. I yelled in misery, but no one could hear me. God! Why did I have to die? It wasn’t not fair!
Why do good people have such short lives while evil prevailed for a long time?
Grandma tossed and turned on the bed for a long time but was unable to fall asleep. She held the scriptures in her arms as if they could give her a little comfort.
It was as if she were hugging me during my childhood. Her hugs were so comforting, making me wish that I could become human again and fulfill her wishes.
Grandma waited for me until midnight, but I didn’t show up. Hence, she finally reluctantly went to bed.
