Chapter 73
Lightning flashed across the horizon, immediately followed by the rumble of rolling thunder.
In that fleeting moment, I noticed something appeared in the front yard.
It was difficult to see in the pitch–black night moments ago, but when lightning lit up the sky, I saw a massive dark figure.
What was that? Was it a tree that Shane moved?
The uneasy feeling grew stronger as I slowly walked toward the massive shadow. It towered over me by more than half my height and was draped in a black waterproof cloth.
I reached out to pull the cloth aside, but I had forgotten that I couldn’t touch anything.
I could only watch as the rain poured noisily onto the waterproof cloth.
What was it? What was being hidden in there?
Whatever it was it
must have something to do with my missing body parts. Otherwise, I
wouldn’t still be stuck here.
After waiting for a long while without any gains, I returned to Shane’s side.
He had just finished showering and was lying on the bed. His phone on the bedside table wast vibrating nonstop, and Amber’s name flashed repeatedly on the screen.
How strange. When Shane was with me, he would always answer Amber’s call no matter when it was. Why was he acting calm now?
A storm seemed to brew in his dark eyes as if he was silently preparing for a tempest.
Perhaps he had already sensed what Amber was doing.
Maybe, he didn’t think that his suspicions were right. And until he had undeniable proof, he wouldn’t tear apart Amber’s facade.
Amber finally stopped calling. Shane’s gaze was fixed on the projection screen, where Titanic was being played.
It was showing the critical scene where the ship struck the iceberg. The ship was starting to sink, and everyone was about to face their imminent fate.
Shane had a solemn expression. Was he thinking about how it must have felt for me when I fell into the sea back then?
The male lead leaped into the freezing water, and the female lead clung to the lone piece of driftwood.
When the whistle was heard, the female lead looked toward the male lead with relief, thinking
2/2
that they were saved. Yet, what she saw was only his lifeless, frozen body.
He wasn’t able to reach shore after all. His brief life ended in the cold embrace of the sea.
The female lead sobbed painfully. That was when tears streamed down Shane’s face.
He murmured softly, “Ally…”
Then, he suddenly grabbed the phone on the bedside table and frantically dialed my number, only to be met once again by the cold, automated voice on the other end.
Shane tapped into my profile picture again. This time, there was no anger or threat, just vulnerability.
His voice in the lonely night sounded even more helpless. “Ally, I was wrong. I really know that I was wrong. Please come back. Don’t play with me. I really miss you.
“I shouldn’t have left you at our wedding. Please come back. We’ll spend our lives happily. I won’t make you sad anymore.
“Don’t you wish to have our honeymoon in Los Vigas? As long as you come back, I’ll go anywhere with you.
“I know about the baby. I’m really sorry. That day, I dropped a business deal worth billions to come to you. I thought you were joking. I didn’t mean to push you. I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry.
Shane curled up, looking utterly helpless. It was a side of him I had never seen before.
If I had seen him like this in the past, I would forgive him for anything he had done instantly.
But now, I could only sit at the edge of the bed and watch as the man trembled with sobs to Titanic’s theme song.
I had no tears left.
“But, Shane… It’s too late. I won’t ever forgive you.
