Chapter 3
“Give up?” Mick seemed to find it funny. “It seems you’re still jealous. Fine, if you’re jealous of me. But are you upset over Ted’s innocent words too?”
Nydia’s expression grew cold. “I’m here to talk about a divorce. Why are you avoiding it? Are you afraid?”
Mick was momentarily stunned, and then his anger flared. “Do you think you can still thrive in the hospital after leaving me?”
Nydia continued, “No matter how strong the rope, it can’t hold a dog that wants to run. To avoid getting hurt later, divorce is just a necessary step.
“You dare insult me!” Mick grabbed her chin tightly. “Nydia, you’ve grown bold.”
Nydia sneered. “So, are we getting a divorce or not?”
“Don’t regret it,” Mick said.
Nydia chuckled. “I only regret not leaving earlier
Mick’s jaw clenched so tightly that his back teeth almost ground together, and he angrily shoved her away. “Fine. I’ll be waiting for you at the courthouse this afternoon!”
With that, he turned and stormed off.
In the past, Mick had left her countless times. Each time, it tore at her heart. Eventually, she was left feeling nothing but numb indifference..
Now, all she felt was relief. The air felt so much fresher without that toxic Mick.
She couldn’t help but laugh.
Then, a thought struck her, and she quickly returned to the office. She double–checked the necessary documents for the divorce and requested leave from her boss.
Mick went straight to Mona’s hospital room. Mona was receiving an IV drip, and though Ted wasn’t there, his snacks were scattered beside her bed, and she occasionally nibbled on them.
Mick, you’re back already? Did you talk to Nydia?” Mona asked.
Mick’s expression darkened.
“Didn’t you say you wanted Nydia to be my attending doctor? Why hasn’t she come?” Monal asked.
Mona paused, sensing the shift in the

Mick coldly scoffed. “She’s filing for divorce.”
Mona’s heart skipped a beat, but she feigned sadness. “It’s all my fault. Mick, you can’t agree to this. Go apologize to Nydia and tell her not to act impulsively.”
Mick, who had originally planned to handle the situation coldly, now felt a surge of irritation.
“Impulsive? Let her see the consequences of acting on impulse!” Mick spat. “Even if she changes her mind and begs me to stay, I won’t agree.”
Mona buried her face in her hands and cried. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have come back.”
Mick softened his tone when he saw her tears. “Our problems have nothing to do with you.
Don’t overthink it.”
Mona shook her head, refusing to accept his comfort. “Can’t you take me with you? I want to help persuade Nydia,” she pleaded.
Mick hesitated at her suggestion. Thinking of how cold Nydia had been earlier, he reluctantly agreed. “Fine.”
At 3:00 pm, Nydia had been waiting outside the courthouse for half an hour. Her anxiety grew with each passing minute. She feared Mick might change his mind and back out at the last
moment.
Just as she was about to call him, a familiar luxury car pulled up beside her. Mick stepped out with an unreadable expression. He didn’t spare her a glance. Instead, he walked around to the other side of the car, opened the door, and helped Mona out.
Soon after, Ted also climbed out of the car. Mick had picked him up earlier.
With a pompous tone, Mick said, “Since we’re getting a divorce, Ted has the right to know.”
He showed no concern about the potential emotional impact on Ted.
Ted fearfully clung to Mick’s hand. “Daddy, I don’t want to stay with Mommy. I want to stay with you!”
Hearing this, Nydia felt a strange sense of relief.
“Don’t worry, I’m not asking for custody,” she replied.
Ted’s eyes widened in shock, and a brief flash of panic crossed his small face.
Mona quickly pulled Ted behind her and pleaded, “Nydia, don’t make this harder than it has to be. Mick hasn’t done anything to hurt you.”
Nydia shot back, “Ms. Poole, do you hide under his bed every day to know so much?”
Mona froze, then tears began to stream down her face. “I…”
Mick’s anger flared. “Nydia, that’s enough! You want a divorce? Fine, but don’t come crawling

Instead, she sneered. “Fine, whoever regrets it is the fool.”
Mick thought she was just putting on a brave face and would be the one crying soon enough. He ignored her, taking Ted inside the courthouse.
Mona walked slowly behind them. As she passed Nydia, her sweet demeanor was gone,
replaced with a cold edge. “In the end, he still chose me.”
Nydia nodded. “Yeah, a dog can’t change its ways.”
Mona’s face darkened. “How dare you speak to me like that?”
Nydia glanced at her and scoffed. “My attitude depends on who I’m dealing with. You’re a dog, so I’m treating you like one.”
Mona sneered. “You’re bold! Once you’re divorced, I’ll make sure you regret
it!
“Stop growling like that. You’re not afraid of dogs, but I sure am,” Nydia shot back
Without another word, she entered the courthouse ahead of Mona.
Mona’s face twisted with fury.
Divorce proceedings required mediation. As the mediator rambled on, Nydia found the constant talking irritating.
Mick noticed she kept her head lowered and assumed she was regretting her decision.
“If you just kneel now…” he began.
“Excuse me, could you u take a break and just stamp the papers so we can leave?” Nydia cut him off, standing up to pour a glass of water for the staff.
The staff sighed. “Well, I wish you both a better future.”
As the red stamp fell onto the papers, Mick’s expression darkened.
Nydia really went all out this time.
At the final window, they submitted their documents. Since they had signed a prenuptial agreement, Nydia voluntarily gave up her share of the stocks and property, as well as custody of the child. She only asked for a 20 million dollar divorce settlement.
The staff double–checked everything several times.
Nydia thought everything was in order. Her monthly salary was over seven thousand dollars, and even if she worked tirelessly for six years, she wouldn’t make 20 million dollars. This divorce was worth it.
Chapter 3
“I’m good,” she said, feeling a sense of liberation and excitement.
Mick glanced at her. Her smooth, porcelain skin had a healthy glow from a good night’s sleep, making her look beautiful and refined. Her sharp eyes, with their dark pupils, gave off a soft but unapproachable vibe.
He unexpectedly recalled all their shared moments and her lively, beautiful past. A sense of unease stirred within him.
Before he could speak, the staff handed over the stamped documents. “There will be a 30–day cooling–off period. After that, you’ll both need to come back to pick up the divorce certificate.”
He froze.
It was finally over. He turned to Nydia, who was packing up with a smile. Yet, her face was as cold as ice.
“Are you happy about this?” he asked.
Nydia stopped–pretending and sarcastically said, ‘I can’t afford to be sad. I’m afraid you’ll tell everyone I can’t get over you. That would be a real loss for me.”
