Hearing those words, my dad angrily shoved her hand away, his face clouded with fury. I could tell he was absolutely livid,
He pointed at Clarice, his voice booming. “Shirley got treated like this in my company, and you’re saying to let it go? What kind of mother are you?”
“Do you even remember what you said when you married me? You promised to treat Shirley as if she were your own daughter!”
He turned his face away, refusing to look at Clarice for another second, and shouted, “I won’t let this slide! Get those two out of our family now!”
The police arrived shortly after and took away Tim and Esther, who were both crying and wailing.
Clarice, on the verge of hysteria, tried to rush forward and stop them, but my dad grabbed her and threw her aside, his voice full of disgust. “Clarice, have you lost your mind?”
At that moment, I heard Esther’s gut–wrenching scream, “Mom! Mom, help me!”
I froze. Mom? Clarice?
A sharp ringing filled my head as if something had just exploded inside
my brain.
