Please My Darling, Marry Me Again
Chapter 5: Old Friends
1/4
Still grumbling, I was taken by Maddie to get treatment. This hospital was in my hometown, where I inevitably ran into an old acquaintance.
“Abby?” I heard a voice, and when I looked around, it was my best friend from high school, “Joyce?”
When old friends meet, there’s always a lot of catching up to do.
With Maddie’s approval, I was able to go out for a rare little while.
I chose hotpot.
“Are you doing well?” Joyce asked cautiously.
I smiled and said, “It’s alright. I have a lot of money, but not a lot of life left.”
Her hand shook as she was picking vegetables and she stared at me in shock.
Only when I focused on putting a piece of meat into my mouth did I realize that she was crying big, fat tears.
“Hey, what happened to you?” I quickly took out two pieces of paper for her to wipe her tears, a bit flustered.

“What illness?”

I waved my hand, “An illness that can’t be cured, it’s nothing, it won’t kill you in a short time.”
I looked out the window and said, “I want to die on a sunny day, winter is still too cold.”
“Are you still with Peter?”
When Peter was mentioned, her eyes dimmed a bit, and she said softly, “Mm.”
I didn’t try to give her any advice, not everyone needs to understand, when you’re alive, just be happy.
“Can I ask you to do me a favor?” I asked her as we left the house.
“What is it?”
“Don’t tell anyone that you met me, if you have the, you can come visit me more often.”
Maddie, the nurse, lectured me, “You’re starting chemotherapy now and it’ll make your hair fall out, so it’s better if we cut it off.”
I pondered and asked, “Can’t I just skip it?”
Maddie got mad, so I laughed and pacified her, “Alright, alright, I’ll consider it, consider it!”

She was about to say more when a tall figure walked in and headed straight towards me.
“Who are you looking for?”

He disregarded her and just stared at me with a cold face, as if he was looking for some conspiracy in my face.
“He’s looking for me. Maddie, let go of my hair and go to work.”
She glanced at the man and then at me, and said in a low voice, “Just call me if you need anything.”
I nodded and sent her away.
Turning to Tristan, I asked him, “Don’t you need to go back for New Year’s with Katie?”
Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Year’s, Katie always had all sorts of excuses to ask Tristan to spend time with her, and for a while I even began to loathe all the holidays, making me feel even more…lonely and helpless.
But then I got used to it, and thought it was okay to spend it alone, until he came to pick on me again.
“What kind of trick are you pulling now?”
My heart tightened up; even though I was used to the sharp knife he spat out at me, it still hurt when it ripped open the wound.

I sighed and said, “Yes, this is my new method of tricking you. Don’t get fooled, just leave quickly.”
“Come with me,” he said, reaching out to grab me, and I was too late to react, walking a few steps with him.
“I…ugh, let me go!” I said more firmly, pushing away his hand.
“What the hell are you doing here? We’re divorced, mind your own business.”
He let go of my hand and backed away two steps, “Don’t even think of using the excuse of being sick to take more money from me. You know we’re already divorced!”
I felt my heart stop beating, and my body felt numb.
I didn’t even want to say a word to him, so I just pushed him away and said, “Go, go quickly, take your shitty money and find your little girlfriend and disappear from my sight!”
The last sentence I almost shouted out. Tristan bit his teeth, adjusted his collar, and walked out, slamming the door behind him.
