Chapter 8 I’ll Take It
Anne paused, her gaze lifting to meet Hugh’s. Her face was calm, devoid of any trace of anger.
Hugh frowned slightly. He had humbled himself to apologize, but she didn’t seem the least bit moved. Not even a flicker of emotion crossed her face. This wasn’t the Anne he knew.
The Anne he remembered had loved him with all her heart and trusted him without question. She had always been by his side, always willing to believe him, no matter what. But now, when he looked into her eyes, it was like there was nothing there at all.
He refused to believe that the woman who had always been so easy to read had suddenly become a stranger.
There had to be an explanation. He was sure that the sight of him with Alicia must have shaken her, making her act this cold.
“Anne, just let me explain, okay?” Hugh’s voice softened, his expression pleading. “That night, I was planning a surprise for you, but I drank too much. Then Alicia just happened to show up. In my state, I… I messed up. I did things I shouldn’t have…”
Anne’s eyes narrowed slightly as she listened to him, her disgust barely contained. How dare he mention the surprise? His “surprise” had pushed her into an abyss, one she could never climb out of.

She couldn’t help but marvel at his acting skills.
In truth, Hugh and Alicia had been involved for more than a year ever since Anne had helped bring Alicia into the entertainment world, giving her some fame.

What Anne hadn’t known was that all along, she’d been kept in
the dark.
“Anne, don’t you know me? The only person I’ve ever loved is you. It was my mistake with Alicia. I missed you so much that I confused her for you. I was wrong, and I’m asking you to forgive me.” Hugh’s voice was filled with sincerity. “I love you more than anything. I’ve always seen you as the one I’m meant to be with.”
Anne stood frozen, her face emotionless. She could barely
keep from laughing. His words didn’t feel like an apology but a thinly veiled excuse, as if she should shoulder the blame for his betrayal. They’d been apart, so in his mind, she should just let it slide, forgive him, and move on.
“Mr. Carter,” she said, her voice cold, as she locked eyes with him. “I think when I blocked your number, I made my position. pretty clear.” She spoke each word deliberately, letting them sink in. “It’s over.”
“Anne!” Hugh’s voice cracked with disbelief, his brow furrowed
in confusion.

“Spare me the fake apologies. There’s no need for us to continue this conversation. A woman like me just isn’t suited for someone like you,” she said, her tone biting.
For a moment, Hugh stood there, stunned, unsure of what to make of her.
Anne didn’t have time to indulge him any longer. She pushed him. aside with a firm hand and strode toward the door. Without another word, she slammed it shut behind her, and in an instant, the world
outside fell silent.
After closing the door, Anne exhaled slowly, trying to steady her breath.
Hugh’s words made her sick. In her past life, she had been so blind, deceived so completely by him. It had cost her everything. Her family was destroyed at his hands, and every member paid the ultimate price.
The images of Hugh and Alicia, hands stained with her blood, haunted her. It was as if she could still see the blood staining the floor, the agony searing her mind.
She placed a hand over her chest, forcing herself to breathe deeply, willing herself not to revisit the past. As for Hugh and Alicia, she’d make them pay, piece by piece.
She wasn’t about to let them feel the consequences of their betrayal too quickly. It would be too kind to let them fall from grace so easily.

“Anne! I heard that bastard showed up at our door. What’s going on?”

James‘ voice, full of fury, rang out as he rushed down the stairs, Chloe following behind him with a worried expression.
“That jerk still has the nerve to come here? Watch me break his legs!” James stormed to the door, ready to confront Hugh, but when he flung it open, there was no sign of him.
“Damn it! If he dares show his face here again, I won’t let him get away with it. He’s really asking for trouble!” James growled, clenching his fists in frustration.
Anne watched her father’s outburst, a smile on her lips. She walked over and wrapped her arms around him, resting her head on his shoulder. “Dad, you’re the best.”
“Anne…” James was caught off guard by the sudden affection. He glanced at Chloe, assuming that Anne was just upset over Hugh. He gently patted her shoulder, trying to offer comfort. “Don’t worry. I’m here.”
In her past life, after Hugh betrayed her, her parents had put all their focus on protecting her. They had left the management of Chastain Holdings to him. Together with Joshua, Hugh had orchestrated the fall of the company, taking it for himself.
Her parents had died at his hands, their last thoughts filled with hope that he would somehow redeem himself and fix the damage he had caused.

But now, her parents were alive and well. They had seen the truth about Hugh. And from now on, she wasn’t just going to protect them. She would protect the family business. Anyone who dared threaten it was her enemy..
Once Anne made up her mind, there was no going back.

Grace was always on top of things. The moment Anne decided to step into the entertainment industry, Grace was already on the phone, arranging for her to take a key role.
On the call, Grace told her that a major opportunity had opened up, a leading role in a youth idol drama that was based on a hot
- IP.

The project had enormous potential, and Grace was confident that Anne would stand out. The role was perfect for her, and yet, back then, Anne had handed it over to Alicia.
Grace had been frustrated for a long time, but after a day and night of searching, she finally found a role perfect for Anne.
“This role’s got great potential, and it’s from a well–known IP. Plus, the acting demands aren’t as intense as the last one,” Grace grumbled on the phone, still irritated that Anne had handed over such a golden opportunity to Alicia. When the director found out that Anne was finally ready to debut, he said he could offer her the role of daughter if she was interested.
“Grace!” Anne interrupted. “What did the director say?”
“He said he’s always had you in mind for his project, but you

gave up the lead role for Alicia. Now that you’re interested, he’s willing to offer you a supporting role. It’s smaller, but if you perform well, it could still be a standout.”
“I’ll take it,” Anne said firmly, cutting her off before Grace could finish.
