I dragged myself, covered in blood, to the
hospital.
The doctor looked shocked.
“Quick, someone help! Pregnant woman is
miscarrying!” He shouted.
My vision blurred. I could see my blood
spreading across the floor.
I was dizzy but held onto my stomach.
My baby.
Nurses lifted me onto a gurney and rushed
me into the operating room.
I saw Mark standing down the hall. A nurse
was talking to him.
く
He looked concerned, his voice gentle.
“Will it scar? Use the best medicine. I don’t
want her to suffer.”
My stomach cramped, the pain tearing me
apart.
I heard fireworks.
Mark’s voice:
“Happy Lantern Festival. I’ll make you both
some rice balls when we get home.”
The doctor: “Quickly! She’s losing too much
blood. Where’s her family? Anyone willing to
donate?”
“She she came alone. No one’s with her ”
“She…she came alone. No one’s with her.”
Chapter 2
My world started to fade, like my soul was
floating out of my body.
I saw nurses running through the hall,
desperately yelling, “We need O negative! O
negative now!”
Mark was holding Debby close, her head
snuggled against his chest.
A nurse grabbed him. “Are you O negative?
We have a patient hemorrhaging. We need
blood, fast.”
Mark shook his head. “Sorry, I’m not.”
He frowned, adding, “Whose family is so
irresponsible? Letting a pregnant woman
come here alone?”
It felt like something was twisting a knife in
my heart.
Yeah, how irresponsible.
Doctors and nurses scrambled. Through the
tiny window, I saw someone finally roll up
their sleeve and start donating.
Mark turned and left, sounding relieved.
“Let’s go, Debby. Don’t want to waste time.”
I lived, but the baby didn’t.
Maybe it was for the best. It wouldn’t have
had a good life in that family.
Nobody came to see me in the hospital.
When I got out, I grabbed my bag and went
straight to the supervisor to get the divorce
decree.
“Mark’s throwing a party tomorrow. Everyone
in town knows, you know that, right?”
I shrugged. “Doesn’t matter to me.”
“Does he know you’re leaving?”
“Nope.”
“Don’t tell him where I went, okay?”
The supervisor paused, then nodded.
