- 7.
Over sixty students had signed up for the
summer camp, adding up to over four
thousand dollars.
That was a lot of money. Sarah was crying as
she said, “I kept it in my desk all the time. I
even counted it before gym. I knew this was
important, so I wouldn’t have just left it
anywhere.”
“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Davison. I let you down. If
this doesn’t get solved, I’ll resign as class
president. I don’t deserve to be president.”
<
She was sobbing, almost hyperventilating, and
the other students rushed to comfort her.
“Did you check everywhere? Maybe it’s stuck
in a book?” Mrs. Davison asked, looking
shocked.
Sarah looked even more upset. “No, this
envelope is so thick, I’d see it right away. It’s
gone, disappeared…”
The other kids started trying to comfort her,
and Mrs. Davison frowned, deep in thought.
Suddenly, Chrissy stood up and shouted,
“Mrs. Davison, I think someone in our class
stole it!”
Everyone gasped, staring at her in disbelief.
く
“According to Sarah, the money went missing during gym. Our classroom is at the end of the hallway, so everyone would have noticed
if someone from another class came in. And
how would anyone know that Sarah had the
money, or find her so quickly and steal it?”
Chrissy actually sounded logical, and
everyone started agreeing with her.
“So I’m sure of it. There’s a thief in our class.
I suggest we all empty our backpacks and
check each other’s stuff.”
It wasn’t my imagination. She had a smug
little smile as she said that.
And she was staring right at me.
As she finished speaking, everyone pulled
L
their backpacks out from their desks.
My desk mate turned to me coldly. “Come on,
let’s check each other’s bags.”
And that’s when my hand brushed against
something hard in my desk.
The texture of kraft paper, bulging from the
rectangular shapes inside.
My heart started pounding.
“Hurry up, Ashley. Don’t waste time,” my desk
mate said impatiently.
I knew I couldn’t let them search me, at least
not against my will.
Just then, I saw Chrissy standing next to me,
く
staring at me with wide eyes.
“Ashley, what are you hiding?”
With everyone watching, Chrissy grabbed my
wrist.
“Thud!” The envelope full of summer camp
money fell to the floor.
“Aha! Ashley did it!” Chrissy couldn’t contain
her excitement, turning to Mrs. Davison and
saying, “Mrs. Davison, the money was in
Ashley’s desk!”
