- 6.
I told David to take our son to the car and
wait for me.
It was getting cold out.
David nodded, trusting me like always.
Fred looked at me with this mix of emotions.
“How did you end up marrying David Grant?”
There was no point in hiding it.
David’s mom was in the hospital with a heart
condition, and I was her doctor.
We talked a lot about her treatment, and
that’s how we met.
He admired how dedicated I was to my
L
patients and my passion for my career.
So, David asked me out.
I could see how much he loved his mom, and I
liked him.
The day David asked me to be his girlfriend, I
asked him a few questions.
“Do you want kids?”
“Yeah, I want kids. I could say the right
things, like ‘I respect your decision,‘ but I
want to be honest. I want a family, a happy
family with kids.”
I kept my face blank and asked, “Will you try
to stop my medical research?”
He shook his head. “No, everyone needs
something besides family. I want to support
you in whatever you want to do.”
“One last question, will you regret it?”
He smiled. “I never regret anything.”
That’s when I decided to give him a shot. I
wanted to give both of us a fresh start.
- V
We fell in love and got married.
The wedding was small, just a simple
ceremony and a few friends and family.
After I told him all this, Fred’s eyes started to
water.
“That little boy is really your son?”
“You said you only wanted to have kids with
me, how could you have a baby with someone
else?”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Fred,
the past is in the past. Don’t get hung up on
- it. When we broke up, the first time and the
second time, the best thing for us was to stay
away from each other, right?”
“Besides, you regretted being with me and
didn’t want kids. I couldn’t live like that.‘
Fred yelled, “I regretted it because you never
supported me! You sent emails to those
music labels telling them not to sign me!”
I was confused.
く
“What are you talking about? I never sent any
emails! I was working three jobs to support
your music dream. I didn’t have time for that,
and I wanted you to succeed more than
anything. Didn’t you know that?”
Fred was stunned.
He covered his mouth, like he couldn’t believe
- it. He asked, “Then why wouldn’t you buy me
that guitar?”
I knew what Fred was trying to say at the
reunion.
“Did you think we had money? Your dad was
sick, we spent all our savings at the hospital.
What did we have? Enough to buy a guitar?”
Fred looked completely broken.
He mumbled, “No… Ashley said it was you
sending those emails. That’s why I never
made it, because you didn’t want me to
succeed, you were afraid I would leave you…”
If I was disappointed and sad about the first
<
time, this time I was completely disgusted.
“We were together for years, and you
believed some random person over me? Don’t
you feel stupid?”
I sighed. “My husband and son are waiting for
- me. I have to ”
Fred asked, “Sarah, do you still love me?”
I shook my head.
“I got over you a long time ago. I love my
husband and son more now.”
I didn’t know why he would ask something like
that.
He was the one who said not to worry about
the past.
I was over it.
