Chapter 6
forget everyone. I wanted to leave while my memories were still intact.
Ivan stepped forward and pushed away the shouting Theodore from my hospital bed. “Get out! You’re not welcome here! Charlotte doesn’t want to see you!”
Theodore started to argue but stopped when he saw the will in Ivan’s hand. The black–and- white document could not be disputed.
Theodore fell to his knees with a thud. He begged “Please, I can cure her. I know I can. Trust me. I can’t live without her…”
I wanted to rush over, pull him up by his ears, and scold him for kneeling. After all, a man’s dignity should not be thrown away so easily. However, I could not move. I could only listen as Ivan lashed out at him with disgust.
Ivan spat, “What’s the point of doing all this now? Charlotte’s never going to wake up! Stop putting on an act. It’s sickening.”
I felt something warm on the back of my hand. With tear–filled eyes, Ivan held my hand and said, “Charlotte, don’t worry.‘

I wanted to pat his head and tell him that he had done well and that I was at peace. Dad had never blamed him, either.
I was just going to join Dad. That was all. And I was happy about it.
However, Ivan continued, saying, “But I’m worried about you. We were supposed to live well together. You’re my only family left in this world. Don’t you even want to say goodbye?”
His words made my heart clench, and my fingers twitched ever so slightly. The monitor beeped, and doctors rushed in, telling Ivan to keep talking.
The doctor said that I might wake up. Ivan rambled on about everything, from childhood to adulthood, never pausing for a single moment.
Eventually, his voice grew hoarse and scratchy like the witches in the bedtime stories that Dad used to tell us. If I kept listening, I would have nightmares.
I wanted to die, but not while haunted by nightmares. So, with cracked lips and a raspy voice, I finally muttered, “Ivan, you’re too damn annoying.”
