Chapter 4
I didn’t know how long Lucien had been standing there, watching. He cut an imposing figure in his designer suit, his face a mask of ice.
Those long legs carried him to my side in swift, predatory strides. His presence beside me felt like a shield of steel.
“This ends now.” His voice could’ve frozen hell over as his
razor–sharp gaze cut through Burke and Madge.
Madge stumbled backward, her words dying in her throat.
“She’s… your wife? What’s the deal with you two?”
My body tensed at Lucien’s presence, instinctively trying to retreat. But his grip found my wrist like a steel trap, his other arm snaking around my waist. No escape.
“She’s my wife. Legally.” He dropped those words like bombs before turning to drag me away.
“That’s impossible!” Burke lost it, screaming after us. “You said you didn’t know her! Someone like you, Lucien – with your standards – settling for her?!”
In the Rolls–Royce’s backseat, Lucien grabbed my face, his jaw tight. “Would it kill you to play damsel in distress once in a while, Sara?”

After a long staredown, I caved. “Fine. I’ll go back with you.”
“Good girl,” he purred, satisfaction written all over his face. “You have no other choice anyway.”
“I’ll deal with Burke.”
A thought hit me. “Did you hire Madge on purpose?”

His lip curled. “They were bitter about losing the project. I just helped them dig their own grave.”
He leaned in close. “Forget about them. You know how hard these seven days were? I missed you so much.”
“I… missed you too.”
Lucien paused, his eyes sparked with interest. “Honey, you’re not being good.”
My heart skipped a beat. “What?”
He plucked the brooch from my coat, revealing a tiny camera. “Gathering evidence against me?”
His lips carried a smile, but his gaze was icy and piercing. In one rough move, he yanked my coat open. “But, I wouldn’t let anyone else see you like this.”
“Shameless,” I cursed through gritted teeth.

He gripped my chin and sneered, “Oh, I can be worse.”
With that, he grabbed my neck and kissed me. His kiss was brutal, stealing my breath.
He had a strong desire, leaving me exhausted every time.

After a week apart, he couldn’t wait to raise the partitions in the car and had his way with me right there.
When we were back home, he said he’d help me bathe, but ended up tangling with me in the bathroom for a long time. I didn’t fall asleep until nearly dawn.
The next day, thanks to his deliberate efforts, news of our engagement spread across the entire city.
“I was wrong before,” he announced, using my hand to slap his own face. “There’s no one in this world more suited for me than you.”
“We’re having a proper wedding, Sara. A fresh start.”
I stayed silent, accepting the bruising kiss he left on my collarbone.
My mother called after seeing the news, thrilled. “That’s my girl, marrying even better than I did!”
“Remember to use the Congreve family’s connections to support

the Gregory family, especially your stepfather’s and brother’s companies.”
I agreed like a good daughter.
But a week later, Burke faced charges for contract fraud, and Madge for corporale espionage. Burke’s assets were frozen, while Madge vanished into thin air.
