“I have something to do today, so I can’t take you to the hospital…”

Godfrey hung up the phone and hesitated for a moment before awkwardly speaking to me, “Elsie, Sirena’s son has a high fever. She might not be able to handle it alone, so I…” I’thrust my fork into my salad and said, “It’s okay. You go ahead. Kids are important.”
He quickly grabbed his clothes and stood up. Before leaving, he glanced at me and said, “Wait for me. I’ll come back to pick you up soon.”
I’finished my meal quietly, ignoring the curious glances from others in the restaurant.
“Why did that man leave just like that?”
Leaving his girlfriend alone here?”
“He delivered a bunch of flowers and then left. What’s going on?”
After finishing my meal alone, I got up and left.
It started to drizzle outside without me noticing, and I didn’t have an umbrella.
I took a cab to the entrance of our neighborhood and walked home slowly. The fine raindrops hit my face, cold and sharp.
After taking a hot shower and finally feeling warm again, I saw Sirena’s update on Instagram.

The warm yellow light shone on them, making them look like a loving family of three.
Godfrey didn’t come back until the next morning.
As soon as he walked in, he began explaining, “Ryan had a high fever all night that wouldn’t go down.”
Ryan was Sirena’s child.
inodded. “Is the kid okay? Why didn’t you stay with them? It must be hard for Sirena to take care of him alone.”
Godfrey paused while taking off his shoes. “Are you being sarcastic again?”
He frowned. “I’m exhausted. I didn’t sleep all night.”

“What?”
‘ll find time to make up our anniversary celebration in the next few days. Don’t be mad.”
I smiled. “I’m not mad.”
He studied my expression carefully before reaching out to hug me. “There’s a company gathering this weekend. Come with me.” This surprised me.
Godfrey never introduced me to his friends or colleagues.
His family background was much better than mine, and his friends and colleagues thought I wasn’t good enough for him.
l’had brought him medicine and meals at his office more than once, but he never publicly introduced me to his colleagues. it felt like I was just a maid to him.
Now he suddenly wanted to take me to the company gathering.
I’shook my head. “No, I’ll probably have to work overtime this weekend.”
Godfrey’s grip on my hand tightened briefly before he let go. He gritted his teeth and said, “Suit yourself.”
I didn’t go, so he took Sirena instead.
While I was working at the office, my phone started buzzing incessantly.
Annoyed, I checked it and found out someone had added me to Godfrey’s company group chat.
Someone sent a lot of photos from their event.
Many featured Sirena, who seemed to get along well with Godfrey’s colleagues.
There was even a video where Godfrey lost a game and was punished by having to do squats while holding Sirena.
Sirena clung to Godfrey’s neck, her cheek pressed against his chest, blushing. It seemed like if she lifted her head just a bit more, she could kiss Godfrey’s cheek. Godfrey’s colleagues were cheering them on in the group chat, saying they looked perfect together and flattering Godfrey.
Since I was in the group chat, I couldn’t pretend not to see it.
