Chapter 6 Why Aren’t You Angry?
Godfrey started picking me up and driving me to work every day. As the training schedule approached, a close colleague said she wanted to take me out for dinner over the weekend. I told Godfrey I would be going out that weekend, and he seemed relieved. “That’s perfect. I have to work this weekend and won’t be able to accompany you. Go have fun with your colleague.”

But he lied to me again. He had just told me he had to work over the weekend, yet I saw him at a children’s themed restaurant in the mall.
He was sitting with Ryan on his lap, and across from him sat Sirena. Sirena was smiling as she wiped the ketchup off Ryan’s mouth. I stood there, watching the smile on Godfrey’s face, and for a moment, they looked like a perfect family of three.
My colleague nudged me. “Elsie, why did you stop?” I smiled and was about to look away when I noticed Godfrey had already seen me. I turned to leave, but he put down Ryan and ran after me.
“Elsie!” He caught up with me and grabbed my hand. “I… Ryan was crying for fries, so I brought him out.”
“pulled my hand back. “It’s fine. Go back and be with them.”
Godfrey shook his head. “No, what are you buying? I’ll go with you.”
“No need, I’m with my colleague.”
Godfrey insisted on accompanying me. He held my hand tightly but hadn’t taken a step when a small hand grabbed his other hand. “Daddy, I still want you to take me to the amusement park.”
Sirena quickly came over. “Elsie, I’m sorry. Ryan is too young to understand.” Yes, he was young, but that didn’t mean he should call someone else ‘daddy‘ right? I glanced at Sirena and Godfrey, nodding. “I understand. A child lacking a father’s love needs more of your time, Godfrey.”
Then I pulled my hand away and turned to leave.”
Godfrey let go of Ryan’s hand and hurried after me. “Elsie, don’t say things in anger. Listen to me!” The child behind him suddenly started crying loudly. Sirena held him, and they both looked pitiful.
it seemed like I was the evil woman who had stolen their husband and father.
П
“Elsie, please let me explain,” he said as he tightly held my hand in his palm. “It’s really just because of Ryan. He’s so young and separated from his father. It’s very sad. He likes me a lot and clings to me. Elsie, can you understand?”
I’stopped walking and nodded. “I understand, really. He’s just a child.”
What did he want me to understand? In the first year of our marriage, his parents urged us to have children. They put all the pressure on me, thinking it was my fault I hadn’t conceived because I wasn’t cooperating with Godfrey. But in fact, it was Godfrey who didn’t like children and refused to have children of our own.
So it wasn’t that he didn’t like children. He just didn’t want children with me.
Seeing his silence, I turned to leave again. He suddenly stepped in front of me, blocking my way. “Elsie, why?”
“Why aren’t you angry about this anymore? What are you thinking?”

I looked at him calmly.
His breathing was rapid as he blocked my path from leaving.
But then his phone started vibrating incessantly.
When he took it out, I saw the caller ID. It was Sirena calling.
Godfrey still answered it.
“What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
You can’t find Ryan? How could he disappear?”
All come right away. Don’t worry!”
After hanging up the phone, Godfrey seemed like he wanted to explain to me.
stepped aside, being considerate and understanding. “They need you.”
He put away his phone and hesitated before looking at me anxiously and leaving in a hurry.
When Godfrey returned home, I had almost finished packing my luggage.
