Sophie was just as shocked.
However, she caught on quickly, seeing her chance to rub salt in my wound, and she played it cool.
With a smirk, she said, “Let’s not talk old–school, giving money for marriage is so outdated. We, the new generation of women, should marry for love, not cash!”
Then she made me look like I was dirt. “Yasmine, you’re giving away fruit for free, stressing about money until you’re going gray. You don’t seriously think you’ve got a shot with Jeff, do you?”
Sophie’s words hit home.
Tracy and Jeffrey exchanged glances.
Just like that, I got the picture.
‘Great, Tracy is using her son as a pawn, expecting me to get into a bidding war with Sophie!‘ I thought to myself.
No way am I falling for that. Otherwise, my father’s whole act about our business tanking would be for nothing.
Sophie was jealous over our wealth, was she not? She saw Jeffrey as her true love? Well, I was stepping back!
‘A smart person doesn’t stick around for trouble, I mused.
Facing those two reckless people, I kept up my act of being weak.
I gripped my fists so tight, shaking with emotion. “Jeff, I may not have money or looks, but you’re always in my heart.”
Sophie, with a dramatic gesture, declared, “Marry me, Jeff. Once we’re hitched, I’ll put your name on my house deed. I don’t want a penny. That car my dad’s getting me? It’s yours to drive.”
Tracy could not hide her smirk at the table.
Jeffrey was trying so hard to hide his anxiety, pressing down on his wrist.
Me? I just cried my eyes out and ran from the restaurant, so ‘disappointed.‘
Later that afternoon, Sophie flaunted their wedding picture online, captioning it, [The treasure of youth I thought I couldn’t have is now mine for life. I’m so lucky, I’ve grabbed my moonlight.]
