Emma remembered she had blocked James on her phone. She unblocked him to
tell him about the divorce in three days..
Sarah worriedly asked, “What if James refuses to leave London?”
Emma shook her head. “Don’t worry, he won’t dare stay.”
The next day, Emma got messages from James:
“Are you still in London? You’re back in Boston, aren’t you? Are you still angry?”
“Everything before was my fault. Please don’t be angry. We’ve been together ten years – I don’t want a divorce.”
“I’m coming back now. Wait for me.”
Even through the screen, Emma could feel James falling apart.
But she wondered why he hadn’t thought about this when putting that
engagement ring on Lucy’s finger?
Seeing his messages only annoyed her, so she blocked him again.
Sarah noticed Emma’s mood and took her to a new hot pot restaurant to cheer her
- up.
But they had barely sat down when Emma spotted her mother there.
The restaurant was jointly owned by the Winters family. It was opening day,
not only was her mother there, but also Emma’s rarely–seen brother.
Emma felt her blood freeze.
She tried to escape, but her mother’s sharp eyes spotted her. Ignoring appearances, she stormed over and grabbed Emma’s hair.
day, and
“Look everyone! This is my ungrateful daughter! Running around pregnant,
chasing men! You ran to London – why not the North Pole? You think marriage. means I can’t control you? How dare you show your face here!”
Emma covered her head, feeling hopeless.
She felt exposed, like everyone was staring at her.
Emma realized James must have twisted the story when telling her family, making
himself look innocent.
In that moment, her hatred for James peaked.

He hadn’t just betrayed her love he was trying to ruin her life too.
Her mother’s voice rang in her head: “Don’t think I don’t know what you’ve been doing! Always blaming James, but look at yourself! You wanted a divorce? You
wanted shame? Well, get your fill today!”
Sarah was desperate. She pushed Emma’s mother back, shouting, “Why blame. Emma? It’s James’s fault! Auntie, you’ve got it wrong!”
“Get away!” her mother glared at Sarah. “I never liked you in school. Emma turned out this way because of you!”
“Don’t touch Emma!” Sarah was furious now. “She’s pregnant! If you keep bullying a pregnant woman, I’m calling the police!”
As Emma’s mother wouldn’t stop, Sarah pulled out her phone to call.
“Enough!”
A man in a dark blue suit stepped forward, pulling Emma’s mother back.
“How can you make such a scene? You might not care about embarrassment, but I
do!”
Emma looked up to see her brother, Jack, whom she hadn’t seen in six months.
She wasn’t particularly close to her brother, who was five years older. She just knew. he was smart, successful, and somewhat cold.
Emma didn’t know him well but didn’t dislike him either.
She was surprised he was defending her now.
Their mother continued raging: “Look at your precious sister!”
Jack looked annoyed: “Shut up! Whatever happened, she’s pregnant. You can’t just yell at her!”
He took Emma’s hand and led her out of the restaurant.
