He glanced toward the cemetery, which loomed closer as we drove, and said, almost too casually, “Should I buy a prime burial plot for your mom?”
I stayed silent the entire way. His voice filled the space between us like static.
When we arrived, he pulled the car smoothly to a stop in front of the cemetery gates. His hand found mine, his gaze softening with a dangerous intensity. “Candice, I love you. Please, come back to me.”
I turned to him, meeting his gaze with a calm that surprised even me. “Stop wasting your time. It’s over.”
I opened the car door, intending to leave, but he blocked my path.

“Is it because of Conner?” His voice quivered between desperation and anger. “Is he really better than me? Has he treated you better than I have?”
He leaned closer, his eyes pleading. “Tell me, Candice, what do I have to do to make you come back to me?”
Without a word, I slipped the black card back onto the seat and stepped out of the car, thinking, ‘The answer was already given the day you cast me aside. Our paths were never meant to cross.‘
As I walked away, I heard the dull thuds of his kicks against the car seat, his anger festering like an open wound. I didn’t need to look back to know his gaze was locked on me, dark and seething.
I knew Elliott well enough to realize this wasn’t the end. His obsession wouldn’t let him give up so easily. If anything, his next move would be even more reckless.
Determined to escape his interference, I decided to resign from my job at the cemetery.
The caretaker looked at me with surprise but didn’t press for details. He quickly processed my resignation without further questions.
Just as I was stepping out, my phone buzzed.
“Candice, you need to come to the hospital immediately,” said a hurried voice. “A man claiming to be your boyfriend attacked Dr. Wright.”
