He glared at me, his voice trembling with fury, “Candice, do you even know who your boyfriend is?”

I helped Conner to his feet, turning my back to Elliott. “If you want to end up in jail, be my guest.”
Elliott sneered. “You think I’m scared of jail?”
I knew he wasn’t. Jail wouldn’t touch him; money was his shield and sword.
“Candice,” he spat, “do you like Conner that much? Don’t test me–I’ll ruin him if I have to.” His threat was the last straw. My patience snapped like a brittle thread.
“Have you had enough?” I shouted. “This has nothing to do with Dr. Wright! Why do you keep dragging innocent people into your mess? When I begged for your help, you listened to those so–called friends of yours who smeared my name. You crushed my dignity beneath your feet. That was when I realized, I never truly knew you.
“Now, after it’s all over, you refuse to let go. Is this how you operate? Do you think you’re entitled to everything you desire, including me?
For the first time, Elliott seemed genuinely stunned. He stared at me, slack–jawed, as if I were a creature he’d never seen before.
“I just… I just don’t want to lose you,” he said, his voice faltering.
“So you hurt others out of desperation?” My voice cut like ice. “Just like how you threw baseless accusations at me before? Let me make this clear, Elliott, we’re done. And I will never look back.”
I stepped away, my legs weak, only to feel a steadying warmth behind me. Conner’s arms encircled me, his presence firm and grounding.
Above me, his voice rang out cold and precise, “Elliott, if you continue to harass Candice, I won’t hesitate to have my brother teach your family a proper lesson.”
