Colton pretended as if we had never even talked about the divorce.
I wasn’t in much of a hurry anyway. Darlene’s tummy was getting bigger by the day, and I knew for sure that she was a lot more anxious than I was for Colton to divorce me.
“Ms. Larkin, we found a tumor in your abdomen the last time we did the spontaneous abortion procedure. We’re worried that it might be malignant. Please come back to the hospital for a follow–up examination.”
I booked an appointment at the hospital and went there shortly after. Just as I’d stepped
into the gynecologist’s office, however, someone suddenly grabbed my arm and pulled me aside.
“Did you follow me here, Gianna?”
I turned around and saw Colton looking at me rather anxiously. He then started explaining himself.
“I… Darlene said that she didn’t feel well, so I had no choice but to bring her to the hospital. If you don’t believe me, you can come in and have a look.”
Then, he dragged me into Darlene’s ward without even waiting for my response.
As soon as she saw me, the smile on Darlene’s face froze at once.
“Gianna? What are you doing here?” Darlene huffed, holding a hand to the back of her
waist.
“I’m divorced now. You can’t use that old trick on me anymore because it won’t work!”

1 looked at the sweater lying on her lap. I had personally knitted it for Colton as his anniversary gift.
It took me forever to learn to knit and make a stylish sweater for Colton. I redid and undid the stitches over and over, finally finishing the sweater after close to six months.
Last year,
I asked Colton to wear it when we went back to my parents‘ home for Christmas, but he told me that he’d torn a large hole in it and thrown it away a long time ago.
When I looked unhappy, he simply retaliated, “It’s such an ugly and stupid sweater anyway. Who the heck would even want to wear it? Can you stop being such a spoiled brat? Did I demand you to make me that sweater?”
But now, the very same sweater was lying intact in Darlene’s lap. It felt like a slap in the face–I could hear my dignity getting trampled on again.
Seeing that my eyes were on the sweater, Darlene smiled and said, “Colton was worried that I’d get cold, so he got me something from the car. It’s a little ugly, but I’ve been using it to cover my legs and warm up my feet. It’s quite cozy.”
Colton seemed to have suddenly remembered it and rushed over to grab the sweater from her. Then, he held it preciously in his arms.
“There was a storm last time, and I was just worried that Darlene would get sick. That’s why I lent it to her.”
I waved my hand nonchalantly.
“It’s yours. You can do whatever you want with it.“
I then turned and walked toward the exit.
Darlene suddenly spoke up.
“Oh, by the way, my baby is nearly five months along. We’re going to meet him very soon. Gianna, you don’t mind if he took Colton’s last name, do you?”
I turned around to look at her in confusion.
Darlene was holding her tummy in her hands, her eyes boring straight into mine.
I then looked at Colton’s flustered expression and did something that shocked them both.
