He saw me keeping vigil next to his bed and brightened up at once. But, his expression very quickly turned wary and apologetic.
“I’m sorry, Gianna. I didn’t think that Darlene would follow you and find you. I also didn’t think that she would pull a knife out at you.”
Colton sounded like he was wracked with guilt and regret.
“When I saw that you were about to get hurt, I couldn’t think of anything else but to protect you and shield you behind me. I know you probably think that it’s ridiculous of me to say so now, but I really love you.
“I can’t imagine what I’d do if you were the one with the knife wound instead of me. I’d be in so much pain…/
“Gianna, can we please start over? I promise that I’ll cherish you this time.”
Colton tried to reach out to me. However, because of his movement, he tugged against his wound a little too hard, and blood seeped through the bandages, dripping down and staining the pristine white hospital sheets.
The deep red spots on the white bedding were very jarring.
“Please, Gianna, I’m begging you. Let’s not get a divorce. We can’t get divorced!”
I stood up in disgust after hearing Colton’s feeble begging. Taking a step back, I wiped away the imaginary blood on my hands and said, “Stop guilt–tripping me like this. You know very well that this kind of behavior only serves to invoke disgust.‘
I left determinedly. Colton’s hand fell onto the bed railing as he shouted after me, prove my sincerity to you!”

After that incident, Darlene was arrested for intentional injury. Supposedly, pregnant women would be acquitted and didn’t have to serve a sentence. However, for whatever reason, Darlene suddenly miscarried before her hearing.
Darlene nearly died during the emergency procedure to remove her unborn child, who had passed away at six months gestation.
Apparently, the surgeon who did the abortion procedure for her wasn’t a licensed doctor. He had severely damaged Darlene’s uterus, which meant she would never be able to have kids again for the rest of her life.
I decided to sit in during Darlene’s hearing in court.
It had just been half a month, but she looked like she had aged by a whole ten years. Her body was bent over, and she didn’t look as wild or haughty as she used to.
When she caught sight of me, she let out a shrill scream and lunged toward me to beat me up. However, the bailiff grabbed hold of her tightly and dragged her toward the defendant’s dock.
With Colton pressuring the system, Darlene’s case went to trial very smoothly. She was sentenced to three years in jail.

As soon as she heard the verdict, Darlene slumped back in her chair in shock. Nobody could get her up to her feet.
Having lost both her ex–husband’s and Colton’s protection, life was going to be very hard and miserable for her from now on.
Meanwhile, I started filing for divorce on my side.
Colton knew he would lose as soon as I took him to court. So, after dragging on for another two weeks, he finally signed the divorce agreement.
It wasn’t until I finally got my divorce certificate that I felt as if a huge weight had just been lifted from my shoulders.
