Chapter 10 Not So Accidental
Emelia’s POV
– –
For a while, there was nothing but black surrounding me. If this was the afterlife, this was depressing. However, it seemed like the spirits had a different plan for me.
Beep… Beep… Beep….
I heard the steady beeping of a machine. I felt my consciousness being pulled by the reality of being alive. As I slowly opened my eyes, a sharp pain ran pierced my head and ran down the side of my body.
It made me wince and groan slightly.
“Emmy, please…” A familiar, warm voice of a woman pleaded. “I need you to wake up. Please…”
The fluorescent lights above were blinding, but I opened my eyes nonetheless. I looked around the immaculately clean beige, plain room I was in
“W–where am 12.
managed to say, although my voice was hoarse.
“Emelia!” The woman’s voice cheered. “You’re finally awake! It’s about time! I couldn’t imagine life without you, bestie!”
I shook my head slightly and looked up to a pair of smiling blue eyes and golden blonde hair. It was Alexis.
“Y–you’re here.” I smiled through the pain. “Where am I?”
As if on cue, a well–dressed man entered my room, donning a stethoscope around his neck and a white lab coat.
“Good morning, Mrs. Russo. I’m Dr. McKnight. It’s good to see you’ve finally woken up.” His smile was warm. How are you feeling?”
“Horrible.” I laughed weakly. “I’m so confused though. What happened to me?”
“You were in a car accident. An intoxicated individual was speeding down the road and ran a stop sign. They struck your side of the vehicle.” The doctor explained. “Another passerby saw everything and called emergency services, and you were airlifted to our facility.”
“It’s been over ten hours… I was so worried that you weren’t going to wake up.” Alexis took my hand as tears slipped down her cheek. “I’m just so glad you’re okay.”
A car accident…
Suddenly, everything came rushing back. The company dinner banquet. Lily’s outburst. The embarrassment from the guests as their eyes bore into me.
But what I remembered the most was Lily’s wish for their past, and Victor’s silent agreement.
My heart began to race as the beeping sound of the monitor was hooked up to rang in unison.
“Hey, hey,” Alexis spoke in a soothing tone. “You’re okay.
low, and deep breaths, Mrs. Russo.” The doctor coaxed gently. “You’re alive and safe, however the effects of disorientation and the pain from the trauma of the impact will linger for quite some time.”
“That’s not it…” I objected. “Where’s Victor? Where’s my husband?”
Alexis and Dr. McKnight exchanged wary glances and hesitated.

“I tried calling him, but he wouldn’t answer.” Alexis answered first as she fidgeted with her hands. “When I came in, I asked the nurses and the doctor if they could try.”
“Our attempts have been unsuccessful.” Dr. McKnight added.
That’s right… Lily lied to him so she could have him all to herself for the night!
Tears welled in my eyes as the physical and emotional pain became too much to bear.
Sensing my anguish, Dr. McKnight nodded his head at Alexis and stepped out of the room to grant us privacy. As soon as the door clicked shut, my best friend turned to me.
“What’s going on between you and Victor?” Alexis asked in a concerned tone. “You gotta tell me.”
Her permission was all I needed, and the floodgates of my tired heart and mind opened up. I confided about everything that happened and led to this very moment.
Alexis’s face creased with outrage as the heat of anger caused her face to flush red. “What an asshole! Who the hell does he think he is, cheating on you like that?!” She shouted.
“They haven’t done anything but “I tried to explain.
Alexis held her finger up to me as she angrily dialed away on her phone. The phone rang twice until whoever she was calling picked up.
“You are one sorry ass husband, Victor Russo!” Alexis yelled. A few seconds passed until she interrupted his voice. “How about instead of asking stupid ass questions, you get to the hospital and come see your WIFE!
Time blurred and I didn’t care to actually keep track of how long it had been, but it didn’t seem like it was long until Victor came barging through the door.
“Emelia!” Victor rushed to my side of the bed and grabbed my hand. “What happened?
It was truly a shock to see Victor so distraught over my well–being instead of Lily’s. For a moment, it made me think he actually cared.
Still, I couldn’t hold back the sarcasm that laced my voice. “Oh, so you are capable of showing concern for me. I was under the impression those feelings were reserved for Lily.”
“Why are you bringing Lily into this? She hasn’t done anything wrong
Alexis came to my side and pushed Victor away. “Like I said, you’re one sorry excuse of a husband! Your wife nearly died in a car accident and all you care about is some spoiled brat?!”
“Watch your tone.” Victor spoke sternly at Alexis. “Lily had nothing to do with what happened to Emelia, so I won’t have you speaking about her like that.”
He turned his attention back to me. “But I got here as soon as I could. Why didn’t you call me?
I scoffed. It seemed as if Lily was truly rubbing off on Victor because now his words sounded like feeble attempts to deflect criticism.
“I did try calling you.” I spoke slowly and deliberately. “Li answered your phone, knowing I was on the line, and hung up on me. She led to you.”
