Chapter 8
When I heard the shocking news that Benjamin had covertly orchestrated an attack on Lucas‘ arm, I was completely immersed in the development of a groundbreaking new project. Upon learning this, I couldn’t help but do a little jump for joy- albeit momentarily–before diving back into my work with laser focus.
Benjamin had been stewing over my neglect for quite some time. The more fair–handed he became in the company, the more creative and ingenious his little “domestic disciplinary actions” grew at home.
One fateful day, Lucas reached out to me through a friend’s phone, his voice dripping with desperation. He said, “Natalie, I surrender.
“Have you resurfaced in the Russell Group? Benjamin’s gone rogue. He’s grabbing every resource of the Blunt Group by any means necessary. Our company’s in dire straits.
“Come back and lend a hand, and let’s get married immediately. Let’s just forget about the whole one–year trial period I mentioned, okay?”
At that, I couldn’t resist rolling my eyes.
I had a hunch that Benjamin had been overlooking not just Lucas‘ arm, but his very sanity. Otherwise, how could he be so

clueless about human communication?

“Lucas, we’ve been over for a long time, and I never gave the so–called investigation period you’ve been mulling over a second thought,” I clarified.
Lucas, on the other side of the phone, spoke with earnestness, “Natalie, stop playing games. I’m dead serious about marrying you this time.
“Jessica’s memory is almost back to normal. I’ve got her in the hospital. Soon, she’ll be her old self again. No one will stand in
our way anymore.
“Will you reconsider?”
Just then, Benjamin emerged from the bathroom, his torso bare, and made his way towards me. He planted a kiss on me, then glanced at my phone with disdain, playfully griping, “More work stuff, huh? Olivia or Cathy again? They better not be discussing work off the clock. I’ll give them the boot if they do.”
Upon hearing Benjamin’s voice, Lucas blew a fuse. “Who’s that man with you? Natalie, did you cheat? Who’s this lowlife?”
I found the whole situation utterly ridiculous. As I reached for the phone to hang up, Benjamin snatched it from my hand and glared at me, inquiring through the receiver, “Are you Lucas?”
Lucas‘ fists tightened as he demanded, “Who the hell are you?”
Benjamin chuckled and held me close. My heart raced as I tried

to wriggle free, only to end up with the bath towel draped haphazardly across the bed.

“Want to know who I am? I’m Benjamin, Natalie’s husband,” he announced proudly.
