Chapter 6
They ended up in some fancy hotel restaurant, the kind with spotless white tablecloths and expensive cutlery. Ima wasted no time, ordering enough food to feed a small army.
“Luca, sweetie, let me peel some shrimp for you,” she said, putting on her best look–how- maternal–1–am act.
Luca, starving, didn’t care about the show. He stuffed his face like he hadn’t eaten in days -because he hadn’t.
Once he was full, Ima handed him her phone with cartoons queued up. Then she took a sip of wine before leaning in toward Bill, her eyes doing all the talking.
Bill instinctively wanted to pull away.
But then Ima gave him a sly smile and tilted her head toward Luca, silently reassuring him that the kid wouldn’t notice.
That’s all it took. Bill ran his hand over her chest, pulling her onto his lap.
The deep red liquid of the wine trailed down their chins.
I stood frozen, covering my mouth in disbelief.
Seriously? Right in front of Luca?
‘No! Luca is still here! Stop it!‘
But they didn’t stop. They didn’t even notice when Luca glanced up from the phone, his wide eyes taking in the scene. For a moment, he just stared, trying to figure it out. Then, he ducked his head back down and went back to his cartoons.
After their shameless display, they finished eating and took Luca home.
The apartment was dark.
“Rhea Ray, where the hell have you been messing around? No shame at all,” Bill grumbled as he fumbled with the key.
Once inside, he stomped straight to the bedroom and saw me lying there: Without even bothering to check if I was okay, he plopped Luca down beside me.
“I’ve brought Luca back. Watch him properly. I’ve got work to finish at the office,” he said, giving my shoulder a little shove.
When I didn’t respond, he rolled his eyes like I was being dramatic. “Fine. I handed the kid over. I’m out.‘
He told Luca to lie down and go to sleep early, then stormed back out, eager to return to his disgusting affair.
