“It was my decision to let Brenda use her mother’s surname for a time. I wanted her to have a normal upbringing, free from the privileges–and burdens–of being a Sinclair.
“Unfortunately, Brenda’s kindness and innocence were taken advantage of. Someone, desperate for attention, even tried to impersonate her.”
David was a master of manipulation—every word perfectly measured with just enough venom to shift the blame squarely onto me.
Brenda’s smirk deepened as the audience turned their disdainful stares toward me.
“Claire almost fooled all of us yesterday!”
“What a psycho–she lied to everyone, even the cops. You think she’ll go to jail for this?”
“David Sinclair himself cleared it up. She’s finished now.”
The speech ended, but no one moved. All eyes were on me, as if waiting for me to crack under the pressure.
1 rose slowly, keeping my gaze locked on David’s. “David Sinclair, aren’t you afraid of karma for what you’re doing?”
He hesitated, clearly not expecting me to hold my ground. After a moment, his eyes narrowed.
“Claire, you’re nothing but an orphan we took in out of kindness. We gave you a home, an education–everything you have. What karma do you think I deserve for that?”
Beside him, Brenda’s expression was pure malice. “You took my family’s charity and turned around to slander me? I’ve never met anyone more shameless.
“Starting today, every ounce of Sinclair family support–every dime–ends. Let’s see how you crawl out of that hole.
“Claire, what’s your next move?”
