Charlotte, still immersed in the fantasy of being proposed to, put on a familiar sulky face and said coquettishly, “If you keep this up, I won’t agree to your proposal!”
Kade’s expression remained completely indifferent as he nodded and dropped a statement that left everyone in the hall completely stunned.
“It doesn’t matter if you agree to it or not since I had no intention of proposing to you.”
Charlotte stared at him in disbelief, her body trembling uncontrollably as she asked, “What do you mean by that?”
“What do I mean?” Kade flung the bouquet to the ground and firmly shut the ring box in his hand. “It means the person I intend to marry isn’t you, Charlotte.”
As soon as he said that, an oppressive silence enveloped the hall, leaving only the faintest sound of gasps breaking the stillness.
Kade, ignoring Charlotte’s reaction, turned on his heel, waved to the guests, and said with a faint smile, “I apologize for the misunderstanding. I want to clarify that tonight’s event was simply a rehearsal for the proposal.
“I’ll be proposing to my girlfriend for real this Sunday–same place, same time. I hope you can all join us for the occasion.”
It didn’t take long for those seasoned scions in attendance to realize that the entire spectacle was nothing more than a ploy to publicly humiliate Charlotte.
All the guests were more than willing to do Kade a favor, acting as if nothing had occurred and casually waving it off.
“It’s all good! I’ll definitely be there to cheer you on, Mr. Dormer!”
“It’s amazing how you went all out to rehearse the proposal, Mr. Dormer! Ms. Giles is truly one lucky lady!”
All those conciliatory remarks coming from all sides only made things worse for Charlotte, who was on the verge of a breakdown. She abandoned all decorum and yelled at Kade, her voice full of fury. “How dare you deceive me, Kade!”
A hush fell over the crowd.
Kade slowly turned around, returning to his indifferent posture. “I deceived you? It sounds a little too harsh, don’t you think? I prefer to think of it as helping out. You’re not my girlfriend, Charlotte. Why would I suddenly propose to you? What made you think that was even a possibility?”
Kade’s scathing remarks, delivered with a nonchalant air, were met with stifled laughter from the crowd.
Charlotte, in a fit of rage, knocked over the champagne tower, yelling, “How dare you humiliate me like this! I’ll fucking make you regret it!”
As a result, all the guests around screamed and scrambled out of the way. Yet, Kade stood his ground, unfazed by the champagne spraying all over him.
He took out a handkerchief from his pocket and slowly wiped the champagne from his face, not even bothering to spare her a glance. “Regret? I’m about to get married, so what’s there to regret?
“Are you saying I would regret upsetting you? You’re merely an ex with no background whom I had broken up with eight years ago. Why would I regret upsetting you?”
Each sentence felt like a dagger to Charlotte’s heart. She couldn’t bear the mocking waves of laughter that grew louder around her, so she lifted her gown and dashed out of the hall.
Yet, as she was just about to leave, a police officer entered the hall and intercepted her.
“You’re Charlotte Lowell, right? We’ve received a report alleging your involvement in an attempted rape case. Please come with us.”
Upon seeing the police officer, Charlotte was completely stunned. She then turned around and met Kade’s cold, unfeeling gaze.
“Brody Reed has already turned himself in, and the bar’s surveillance footage has already been handed over to the police. You should just be completely honest and try to get a shorter sentence. You might even get out of prison in time for my wedding with Yvie.”
