Chapter 6
Kade’s smile stiffened. He only realized Yvette might be upset after seeing her frosty expression. Then, he approached her side, took her hand, and placed a necklace in her palm as if performing a magic trick.
He said, “Sorry. I was rushing to get your birthday present. That’s why I left you at Hillside Nook last night. Could you forgive me this once?”
Did he seriously think he could gain Yvette’s forgiveness with such a flawed excuse?
Yvette stared him down without saying a word, nor did she accept the necklace.
After waiting a long time but not receiving a response from her, Kade sighed. He waved the necklace before her and asked, “Why do you seem like your mind is elsewhere these days? Is something bothering you?”
Only then did Yvette stop staring at him. She turned to look out the window, her bland voice ringing out. “Something is bothering me. My friend recently discovered her long–time boyfriend had always been lying to her.
“She found out the truth and ranted about it to me. She’s asking me whether she should forgive him.”
Kade was relieved that it was only a minor issue. He chuckled softly for a second, then gave a logical response. “What’s there to be frustrated about? Liars don’t deserve forgiveness. She should break up with him.”
“Liars don’t deserve forgiveness,” Yvette repeated with the same tone as the former.
Kade chuckled as he nodded and tousled Yvette’s hair. “That’s right. My darling girlfriend, here, had better not get lied to by anyone.”
A faint smile crept onto Yvette’s otherwise stoic face just then. “That phrase can be applied to you and me.”
Kade’s brows furrowed. He was about to ask what she meant when his phone rang inside his pocket. He didn’t bother looking at who the caller was and immediately answered the call. “Who’s this?”
“It’s me, Kay. We should talk.”
Yvette was standing close to Kade, so she could tell it was Charlotte’s voice on the other end of the call. She looked up and instantly saw Kade’s expression tense for a few seconds.
Kade quickly resumed his usual countenance. He gave a low hum of agreement, speedily hung up, and made up a random reason to leave.
Yvette peered at the necklace that Kade tossed onto the table.
Following that, she stood and headed into the bedroom.
After rushing to complete her drafts for two hours, Yvette decided to take a break. So, she casually scrolled on her social media. She had just scrolled down once when she saw a post from Charlotte, who she had just followed yesterday.
Charlotte had uploaded it half an hour ago.
The caption read, “It’s been eight years, but you’re still the guy who’ll soften whenever I cheer you up. I like that about you.” Above the caption was a photo showing a cocktail shrimp platter. There was also a pair of hands that was shelling a shrimp.
Yvette snorted when she saw those slender hands and the familiar watch on one of the wrists. She then shut her phone.
Kade didn’t return for the next few days. He would only send an occasional text to say he was busy. However, Yvette knew what he was doing every day through Charlotte’s posts.
Charlotte and Kade had gone to the beach to watch the sunset, enjoyed fireworks at a theme park, went camping, and did many more activities.
Yvette knew Charlotte had posted those photos on purpose so that she would see them. However, she wasn’t infuriated, which was how Charlotte hoped she would react. Instead, she was focused on packing her things.
She bought many things while living in Jurbane City these past few years. Because of that, it took several days to clear out all her belongings.
Yvette donated all her valuables. She was about to take a breather after the charity organization collected everything from her doorstep.
That was when she received a call from Kade.
She answered it, but Kade wasn’t on the other end of the call. It was Kade’s friend, Wren Xenos, who spoke up. “Yvette, Kay got into an argument with someone.
“He’s risking his life by racing against the guy! You should hurry over to the club and persuade him not to do it!”
Yvette’s eyelid twitched several times when she heard that. She hesitated for a while before picking up her house keys and hailing a taxi to rush to the club.
Wren had been waiting at the entrance for Yvette.
Once the latter arrived, he speedily led Yvette to the scene. He even explained everything to her as they made their way over.
“A pair of earrings caught Charlotte’s attention at an auction a few days ago. Kay had gone to the washroom, so someone else bought the earrings. Kay knew how much Charlotte liked them, so he insisted on tracking down the person to buy the earrings from them.
“The person turned out to also be a racer. He claims he’s rich, so he doesn’t care for money. Instead, he suggested making a big bet for the earrings. He and Kade settled on a race where the winner would get the earrings.
“I wouldn’t have troubled you over this if it were a regular race track, but those two chose the race track of death! That path is perilous! Even an internationally famous race car driver would struggle to finish that track unharmed!
“Yvette, you’re Kay’s girlfriend! Can’t you think of a way to stop him from racing?”
