Chapter 8
After arriving home, Yvette received a call from her editor, Henry Levine. “Yvie, your comic went viral as soon as it was published! Your readers are asking for a sequel. What do you think?”
Yvette had been so busy at the hospital lately that she only found out about this now.
Henry kept encouraging her to create a sequel while the original was still popular, but she politely declined.
The comic was based on her and Kade’s relationship, and she had intentionally ended it right before she found out about the truth.
Continuing the story would pretty much ruin it.
She logged into her long–neglected Instagram account and watched as the comments increased rapidly with a smile.
Seeing her finally brighten up, Kade leaned over and teased her. “Your comic did well, then? How about I throw a celebratory party for you?”
Before Yvette could stop him, he sent several messages out.
She could only swallow her rejection and change the subject. “Have you seen the comic?”
“No, I haven’t. I can’t stand romance comics. You can just tell me the gist of it.”
He hadn’t even seen it. What was the party for, then?
It was probably just an excuse to see Charlotte.
Yvette watched as Kade continued typing on his phone, looking casual. She did not bother wasting her breath and went back to her room.
Kade had chosen to hold the party at a hotel ballroom.
Just as Yvette had expected, Charlotte came. However, she wasn’t alone.
She had brought a male partner with her, and the two of them were constantly chatting with each other.
Kade almost broke the glass he was holding when he saw them.
Yvette did not care about his feelings. She excused herself and went to the bathroom.
When she came out, she saw that a sign for maintenance had been placed on the door. She was surprised, wondering if something had happened. Just then, a figure appeared around the
corner.
It was Charlotte’s male companion. He blocked her path with a flippant look, whistling as he did so.
Frowning, Yvette tried to walk around him, but he grabbed her hand and tried to kiss her, his breath reeking of alcohol.
The move startled her so badly that she went pale. She raised her hand to push him away. “What are you doing?”
The man raised his eyebrows and leered arrogantly. “Stop pretending to be innocent. Charlotte’s told me you’re desperate for male attention. Don’t bother fighting with her. Just be with me.
He pushed her against the sink, using his height and strength to assault her.
Yvette struggled desperately, but she couldn’t break free.
Just as he was about to tear open the collar of her shirt, her hand landed on a flower pot by the sink. Without thinking, she grabbed it and smashed it against the back of his head.
With a dull thud, the man collapsed to the ground, his face twisted in pain.
Yvette did not dare to look back as she escaped from the bathroom.
As soon as she stepped out, she saw Charlotte waiting outside.
Yvette had been well–protected by her family, which made her soft–spoken and quiet. However, no matter how mild–mannered she was, she couldn’t quite hold back her temper after escaping from an orchestrated assault.
Thinking of the man’s words earlier, Yvette raised her hand and slapped Charlotte without hesitation. “You did this on purpose, didn’t you?”
Despite the slap, Charlotte did not look angry, even when faced with Yvette’s fury. Instead, she laughed. “You mean him? Yeah, so what if I brought him here on purpose? I was just looking out for you. Being my substitute, you must’ve been so lonely since I came back. Zachary’s good at sex. He will definitely satisfy you…”
Her insulting words only infuriated Yvette further. Unable to hold in her anger, she raised her hand again. However, before she could slap Charlotte, someone caught her hand.
Yvette turned and saw Kade standing behind her, his expression dark.
Goal achieved, Charlotte immediately put on an aggrieved expression and threw herself into Kade’s arms, crying. “Kay, does your girlfriend hate me? I just got in her way, and she tried to slap me.”
Kade’s expression darkened further at that. “Yvette Giles, how could you hit someone for no reason? Sean and I taught you better than that!”
Yvette’s eyes reddened. Her voice trembled out of anger and lingering fear. “No reason? There are cameras in the corridor; check them out yourself to see what she did and why I hit her!”
She wanted to let the facts speak for themselves, but Kade was fully convinced of Charlotte’s innocence. He did not want to check the surveillance cameras.
“No matter what, you can’t just hit people! Besides, you’ve only met Charlotte once before this. What could she have done to you? Apologize to her at once!”
