Chapter 23
Shane suddenly opened his eyes and gripped Devon’s hand tightly, calling my name.
“Are you okay, Mr. Lundberg? How did you end up on the floor?” Devon asked with concern.
Shane froze for a moment before coming to his senses. His face was pale. “Where’s Allison?”
“Isn’t she still in Gildford? What happened?”
Shane mumbled in confusion, “So it was just a dream.”
“It must be because you’ve been thinking about Mrs. Lundberg so much. I’ve prepared the flowers and gifts. We can go anytime. But you don’t look too good. Do you want to go to the hospital first?”
Shane looked conflicted. I wondered what he had dreamed about last night.
“No need. Just take me to the airport. Get my clothes ready,” he ordered.
Then, he walked to the bathroom with a stern expression. Meanwhile, Devon chose a beige suit for Shane and stood by the door.
After a quick wash, Shane stepped out. Just as he was about to take the suit, he paused. “Get
me a different one.”
”
He frowned in displeasure. “Forget it. I’ll pick it myself.”
Frustrated, he opened the wardrobe, which was filled with light–colored suits.
That was when he realized he hadn’t worn dark colors in a long time, and I hadn’t bought him any new clothes in over a year.
Not just the closet, but the entire master bedroom was filled with everything related to Amber. I had already grown distant from him long ago.
Shane opened every wardrobe until finally, in the last one, he found an old black suit. It was still wrapped in a laundry bag, neatly pressed and dust–free.
This suit was the one he wore when we got engaged. Back then, he could only see me, and he was so nervous that he couldn’t even tie his own bowtie.
I wore my white dress. When I reached out to fix his tie, our eyes met. Our gazes were filled with nothing but affection.
I smiled. “Shane, you look so good in a suit that it makes me want to kiss you.” I tiptoed and kissed his lips.
Everything about love at 18 was perfect. Shane chose this suit, probably hoping it would help
us reconnect..
As he looked at his reflection, the nervous, youthful man from before was nowhere to be seen. In his place stood a mature man, though his expression was heavy with darkness and worry.
Feelings, like time, could never be recaptured.
“Let’s go to the airport.”
“It’s still early, Mr. Lundberg. How about some breakfast first? Mrs. Lundberg said you have stomach issues and should eat on time,” Devond said.
Upon hearing that, Shane stopped midway through opening the door.
Devon, thinking Shane might scold him for nagging, quickly added, “If you’re not hungry, that’s fine. The plane will serve food anyway.”
“It’s fine. I’ll eat at home. Have them prepare something simple.”
Shane ate absentmindedly, then stood up. “Prepare the car. We’re going to the airport.”
He seemed anxious, as they still had plenty of time before the flight.
Just as he was about to leave, a voice came from upstairs. “This is bad, Mr. Lundberg! Ms. Schultz fainted!”
The person who was about to leave rushed past me like a gust of wind. In the blink of an eye, he was already upstairs. Soon after, he rushed out holding Amber, hurrying to get in the car.
Devon cautiously asked, “Are we going to the airport?”
“To the hospital.”
No one was surprised by this outcome. For the past two years, whenever both Amber and I were in trouble, he always chose Amber without hesitation.
This time was no different, and I felt nothing. I was numb, no longer feeling the sting.
I stood by the car and looked up at the second floor. On the balcony, there were two figures, one sitting, the other standing.
Sitting in the wheelchair, Damon watched it all with indifference. His thin lips curled into a mocking smile.
