Chapter 24
Amber was rushed to the emergency room. Shane stood outside the door, anxiously awaiting any news. His face was etched with worry.
Devon cautiously reminded him, “Mr. Lundberg, I’ve already informed the Schultzes. Should we head to the airport now? It’s getting late. We might miss the flight.”
Gildford was a remote town on a high plateau that had only one flight a day from Dawsbury.
Recently, the weather there had been unstable, with frequent flight cancellations, which was why Devon kindly gave the reminder.
Shane frowned in frustration and scolded, “Are you dumb? Allison is perfectly fine in
Gildford, living her life. She’s not going to die. But Abbie’s life is at risk. How could I leave her now?”
Devon thought Shane’s late–night call for flowers and gifts was because he was preparing to apologize to me..
Just yesterday, Shane had claimed that I was more important than Amber. But now, his actions seemed to contradict that completely.
I saw Devon’s eyes darken. Perhaps he felt bad for me.
After all, he had witnessed how we went from being deeply in love to this state of distance. I think deep down, Devon hoped for a reconciliation between Shane and me.
He lowered his head to hide the disappointment in his eyes. “I’ll go take care of the ticket cancellation.”
By the time the Schultzes arrived, Amber was wheeled out. Holding her medical results, the doctor called out, “Family of the patient?”
Shane quickly stepped forward. “I’m her brother. How’s Abbie?”
The doctor glanced at his anxious expression before speaking. “She’s out of danger now. But what were you thinking? You knew about her heart condition, yet you deliberately provoked her? If she hadn’t been treated in time, she could have died.”
“Provoked?” The Schultzes turned to Shane. “Abbie returned to the Lundberg residence yesterday. What provoked her?”
Shane was just as confused. “Don’t worry. I’ll find out what happened. What matters is that Abbie is okay.”
Inside the ward, the family gathered around Amber, treating her as if she were a fragile porcelain doll. Their eyes were full of concern.
It reminded me of the time I hadn’t left the Schultz residence yet when the pandemic caused

the lockdown.
Archer was stuck at the company, and I volunteered to go take care of him. But when I caught COVID, the entire family rushed to move out of the villa, terrified of being infected by me..
That was when I realized that the rift caused by Amber between me and my family was beyond repair. To them, I was insignificant.
Every time Amber had the slightest issue, they would make a big deal out of it and surround her with attention. Meanwhile, I stood off to the side, feeling a pang of envy.
At that moment, Eileen Romero, the helper who usually took care of Amber, appeared. Shane’s face darkened as he asked her, “What happened to Abbie? Why was she so worked
up?”
“Ms. Schultz was looking at her phone when she got the episode,” Ejleen replied. “I glanced at it, and it was filled with hateful messages aimed at her.”
