Chapter 25
“Hateful messages? From whom?” Shane asked.
“I don’t know,” Eileen replied. “Since last night, Ms. Schultz’s phone has been buzzing non- stop. I suspect someone leaked her phone number.”
Shane took Amber’s phone, powered it on, and easily cracked the password.
He opened the call log, and as expected, it was filled with harassing calls from all over the country. There were also countless messages, full of foul language.
The messages accused Amber of seducing another woman’s husband, calling her shameless for causing the groom to flee his own wedding.
Just as Shane turned the phone on, another call came in. He answered, and the voice on the other end was that of a middle–aged woman.
“You shameless slut! How dare you seduce a married man? You’ll die miserably!”
The people in the ward were all from prestigious backgrounds. They had never heard such crude language.
Without a word, Shane immediately hung up. There was no need to argue with such a vulgar
person.
“My poor Abbie. How did she get caught up in something like this? Who did this?” Mom gazed at the still–unconscious Amber with her eyes filled with concern.
Shane’s expression darkened. “It must be Allison. She’s behind this.”
My family and my husband didn’t even bother to investigate. They quickly blamed me without
hesitation.
As Amber had done countless times over the years, I was painted as the villain, always at fault no matter what I did.
Just then, from the bed came a weak voice, “Dad, Mom, Shane, please don’t blame Ally. I shouldn’t have made that call and ruined her wedding. She’s not wrong to blame me.”
With a pale face, Amber lay on the hospital bed, crying as she confessed. This tactic always worked. It made them pity her even more.
She reached for Shane’s sleeve. “Shane, you were going to go pick Ally up from Gildford, weren’t you? Just go. I’m fine. Once you get there, apologize to Ally for me. I was wrong. After she comes back, I’ll go abroad and never show up in front of her again.
Shane frowned. “How can you go abroad with your health in this condition?”
“Exactly. Don’t worry about that brat. I’ve never seen someone so petty. She threw a tantrum
because of a single phone call you made to Shane in an emergency, and now she’s gone off the rails. It’s ridiculous!”
Shane suddenly his mind. “I won’t go to Gildford anymore. It’ll be your grandma’s birthday in a few days. She’ll surely return by then.”
I stared out at the snow falling outside. My heart was heavy with one thought I wouldn’t be able to make it to Grandma’s birthday.
By then, would anyone even notice that I never went to Gildford and that I was dead?
