Chapter 35
My family left after offering Amber some words of comfort, leaving only her and Shane behind. He had been so focused on Amber that he forgot about my disappearance.
“Abbie, try not to let Mrs. Schultz Senior’s words bother you. She’s been getting on in years.”
“Shane, I know how things are. But with Grandma being so mad at me, I doubt she’ll accept my gift.” She took out a book bound in human skin.
“Shane, could you please help me give this to Grandma? She has always been devoted to her faith. This holy book is blessed by a high–ranking religious master. It will surely bring her peace, harmony, and long–lasting blessings.”
“Abbie, that’s so thoughtful of you. I’m sure Grandma will appreciate your kindness eventually. Here, give it to me.”
He took the human–skin book from her.
A shiver ran down his spine as he took the human skin book. Despite his apprehension, his fingers couldn’t resist gliding over the cover.
The texture was surprisingly smooth, much like a woman’s skin. It sparked an unanticipated wave of desire within him.
As he realized his thoughts, Shane dismissed them, feeling a little uneasy about it.
“Oh, and Shane, please don’t tell her it’s from me, and don’t mention it’s a human–skin book. She’s not very fond of me, and I don’t think she’d appreciate it.”
“I understand.”
Shane then gently ruffled Amber’s hair. “Don’t ever think of doing something like that again. We were so worried about you.”
“Shane, you’re the best.”
Their amorous glances and gestures made me want to vomit.
After parting ways with her, Shane entered the room with the book and his gift. Grandma had finished her spiced root vegetable soup. She looked a lot calmer by now.
Upon hearing footsteps, she instinctively called out, “Ally, is that you? Come here, let me see……”
Her gaze fell on Shane, and her expression turned cold. “It’s you again. What do you want now?
Shane knew Grandma was still angry, so he lowered his posture and sat on a footstool by the bed.

“Mrs. Schultz Senior, I know it was wrong of me to run away from the wedding. I’ve been with Ally for so many years, and she’s the only woman for me. Abbie is just my sister. I can swear to you right now that I’ll treat Ally well from now on and never hurt her again.”
Grandma’s eyes narrowed, her face menacing. “Remember, there’s always God. I want you to solemnly swear in the meditation corner, under the watchful eye of the divine. If you betray Ally, may you and your entire bloodline suffer for eternity.”
Shane hesitated when he heard that. Even though he’d decided to break things off with Amber for good, there was that one night…
“Are you too afraid to do it? Then don’t bother pretending. I’m not falling for it!”
Provoked by Grandma, he said, “Mrs. Schultz Senior, every word I say is true. I’m not afraid.”
With that, he walked into the meditation corner. It was a room set aside for Grandma’s worship and devotion.
As he entered, the scent of sandalwood wafted through the air. The room served as a conduit to the divine, offering a sense of peace and connection to something greater.
Shane sat in a meditative pose with eyes closed. As he sought inner peace, a sense of unease unexpectedly arose.
Grandma stood nearby, leaning on her cane. “Go ahead and swear! What are you afraid of?”
Shane raised his hands and swore. “With all my heart, I, Shane Lundberg, promise to love Allison Schultz unconditionally. I pledge to be her protector, her companion, and her forever love. May the universe bear witness to my vow, and may I face the consequences if I ever falter.
As soon as the words were spoken, a bolt of lightning streaked across the night sky, and a sudden clap of thunder boomed outside. The air was filled with a sudden, deafening boom!
