Chapter 50
“Mr. Lundberg, I’ve handled countless cases over the years. Based on my experience, it’s
highly likely that Mrs. Lundberg has already been harmed” As a police officer, it was Liam’s responsibility to warn citizens of potential dangers.
Shane didn’t want to hear any of it. When suggested that someone had harmed me, Shane impatiently cut him off. “Officer Ashford, we never wronged you. Why can’t you bear to see my wife safe and sound? Must you keep cursing her?”
“Mr. Lundberg, you’ve misunderstood. I was only concerned for Mrs. Lundberg’s safety.” Liam sighed.
Shane shot him a look. “Officer Ashford, didn’t your son pursue my wife in the past? If this is about some lingering resentment over unrequited feelings, then you’re a disgrace to the police. You keep insisting my wife has been harmed. But have you received any reports of unidentified female bodies lately?”
Liam’s expression shifted. “No, we haven’t. Mr. Lundberg, I’m just giving you a friendly reminder. It’s up to you whether to heed it or not”
With that, Liam walked away. Some of his men grumbled on his behalf. “Captain, why waste your breath on him? He clearly doesn’t appreciate it.”
Liam waved them off. “It’s nothing. After all, my son used to care for her. I’m worried he’ll be heartbroken if something happens to her.”
He was talking about Jason. Back in college, Jason had pursued me relentlessly. In a desperate attempt to make me date him, he even
resorted to attempting suicide.
I had crossed paths with Liam because of this. Later, the Ashford family seemed to have a serious talk with Jason. He transferred to another school, and we lost contact after that.
Liam waved them off and told them to focus on the missing person case at hand.
I followed Shane back to his car. He looked drained. He rubbed his temples as he ordered Devon, “I don’t care what it takes. Find Allison within three days. Also, investigate what’s going on in Gildford,”
“Yes, Mr. Lundberg.” Devon nodded.
“Wait.” Shane suddenly opened his eyes, his voice hesitant. “Also, look into whether there have been any cases involving women in this city recently.”
“I understand, Mr. Lundberg. Don
Devon reassured him.
Shane hummed.
worry. Mrs. Lundberg is alive and well. She’ll be fine.”
Ever since Shane returned to the office, he had seemed completely out of sorts. He event managed to sign the wrong name on his contracts.
During a meeting, when his executives presented a drop in profits compared to the previous quarter, everyone braced themselves for a harsh scolding.
To their shock, Shane stared blankly for a moment and muttered, “You’ve all done well. Keep
the effort next quarter.”
up
The entire room was confused.
“Alright, the meeting is over.” Shane left the meeting room, loosening his tie as he went.
When he spotted Devon by his desk, he immediately asked, “Have you found anything?”
“Yes. The person renting the house in Gildford wasn’t Mrs. Lundberg. It was a young woman named Zoe Schultz. Here’s her photo.” Devon placed the photo in front of Shane.
The young woman looked to be around the same age as me. From the side, she did resemble me, and she happened to share the same surname, which led to the misunderstanding.
Seeing the evidence, Shane finally breathed a sigh of relief. “Where did Allison go?”
Devon shook his head. “I investigated all transportation methods. Aside from the plane ticket she didn’t use, she hasn’t purchased any other tickets through official channels.”
“So she never left and is still in the city?” Shane huffed. “I knew it. She’s doing this to grab everyone’s attention. Allison, I’m disappointed.”
Devon added, “Mr. Lundberg, I don’t think this is Mrs. Lundberg’s fault. I uncovered some troubling news. There have been multiple reports of missing women in this city and nearby areas recently.”
