Chapter 66
The disappearance of women recently caught the entire city’s attention. Some bloggers exposed how things worked behind the scenes for scam operation groups so citizens would also start understanding this dark industry.
Shane didn’t even need an in–depth understanding to know that women who ended up in the industry wouldn’t end up well. He contacted several bosses in the Chambers of Commerce.
The Lundberg family was well–known and usually handled projects that cost more than tens and even hundreds of millions. It was usually hard to curry favor with Shane.
These bosses never thought he would personally invite them to chat, so they were willing to bend over backward for him.
There were several escorts in the room. Shane sat in the middle of the booth. He held a cigarette between his fingers, seeming rather disheveled.
I have never seen this look on him before. At the start, I was anxiously waiting for him to find my corpse so I could rest in peace as soon as possible. Maybe I could even disappear from this world.
But I was no longer in a hurry today and kept an open mind. As long as he had no news of my death, he would be absorbed in finding me. He would never eat or sleep well, completely uneasy day and night.
Wasn’t this a form of revenge? I sat in an empty chair and silently watched this farce.
The leader of the roguish businessmen began to slip his fingers under one of the women’s dresses. “Mr. Lundberg, I heard you have a big project for us to work on together. Are we even fit to cooperate with Lundberg Group?”
“Don’t say it that way, Vincent. Two heads are better than one. Mr. Lundberg must have run into something tricky to handle.”
“Mr. Lundberg, why don’t you tell us right away? There wouldn’t be any complaints from us as long as we can help you.”
Shane finally sat up and extinguished the cigarette in the ashtray. His voice was slightly hoarse. “I need you to help me find someone. She went missing early this month. I suspect the human traffickers have taken her away.”
All these businessmen were sharp–minded and clearly didn’t want to be involved. Everyone. knew that the leaders of the scam operation centers overseas came from our country. The forces were completely intertwined, and now the Lundbergs were becoming involved.
“Mr. Lundberg, this isn’t a trivial matter. You should quickly call the police!”
Shane raised his glass of whiskey while swirling the ice inside. “If the police were of any use,
2/2
why have so many people gone missing?
“Even if the other party remained cautious and hasn’t dared to make a move, what about those who have been taken away? The police might not even find them. Even if they did, it might be too late.”
I understood that Shane refused to report the matter to the police mainly because he had missed out on the best opportunity.
He and the Schultzes already told the captain to mind his business. How could someone as distinguished as Shane admit that he was wrong?
Shane downed the rest of his drink before setting the wine glass down heavily.
“I know you guys are close with some of the leaders of these scam operation groups. Consider it a favor owed to me–as long as you can bring her back to me, that’s considered a big help to the Lundbergs. You can ask me for anything,” Shane promised.
That was quite a promise. Getting a favor from the Lundberg family would mean that their companies could soar higher than ever.
Vincent Porter asked cautiously, “Mr. Lundberg, may I know who this woman is to you?”
“She’s my…” Shane trailed off before saying, “She’s my younger cousin.”
I leaned against the couch and chuckled quietly. From the day I died, he kept sinking lower in
my eyes.
If I were taken to the scam operation center, my reputation would probably be ruined. How could the Lundbergs let such a tainted woman be Mrs. Lundberg?
Even if I was alive and still could be rescued, Shane would still divorce me. No matter how things went, our ending was determined from the start.
I slapped myself hard, but I couldn’t feel the pain anymore. I felt terribly regretful. Why did I involve myself with such a man to this day?
From the start until now, he had never been in love with me or Amber. He only loved himself.
“This isn’t anything pleasant. I hope all of you can keep this a secret. After all, she’s a woman and still has a future,” Shane said.
