Chapter 78
Chapter 78
Devon was a little surprised. After all, Amber was the person Shane had most cherished in the
past two years.
He probed further, “Mr. Lundberg, what specifically do you want me to investigate?”
“I need to know exactly how Ally lost her child and what she did behind my back to harm Ally, “Shane replied, his frown deepening.
I could see the conflict and torment written all over his face.
On one hand, he wanted to uncover the truth. On the other, he feared the truth would be too brutal, shattering the facade he had built around Amber.
The worse she turned out to be, the more it would prove how deeply he had wronged me in the past and the more disgraceful his own role in all this would seem.
With no other choice, he spoke again. “Also, make arrangements for me to leave the country as soon as possible.”
“Okay, understood. It’s already very late tonight. Please get some rest,” Devon replied.
Shane’s flight was scheduled for the following afternoon, and he still had a pile of unresolved matters to deal with.
Instead of going home that evening, he dragged his exhausted body to a suite, intending to
rest for a while.
I hadn’t been here in a long time, and the layout had changed significantly since the days when I had been around. The photos of him and me had somehow been replaced with pictures
of him and Amber.
The bedsheets were in the floral pattern Amber liked, and her belongings were scattered across the shelves beside the bed.
Shane was already very tired, but the sight of everything in the suite being tied to Amber
stunned him.
He sat down at the edge of the bed, pulled off his tie with one hand, and lit a cigarette.
The entire scene was one of exhaustion and loneliness. He stared at the photo on the bedside table without blinking.
Maybe he found it strange, too, that a place that was supposed to be for the two of us was now
filled with traces of Amber.
And what did that make me?
When he finished his cigarette, he didn’t bother to wash up. Instead, he grabbed a tote bag and

began packing away everything that belonged to Amber.
It was as if he could erase Amber completely from his world by doing so.
The items he had packed were meant to be shoved into the closet, but when he opened it, he
froze.
Inside the closet, besides his own clothes, half the space was occupied by Amber’s. It had clothes from spring to winter, even including sleeping wear, bathrobes, and intimate undergarments.
The more he looked, the more he laughed. It was a bitter, mocking laugh.
Then, he flew into a fit of rage, yanking out several pieces of clothes and throwing them onto
the floor.
See? Amber had already seeped into every corner of his life.
He could pack up the clothes, but he couldn’t erase her traces from his existence.
In a fit of frustration, Shane left everything behind and stormed into the bathroom, slamming the door shut with a loud bang.
I crouched on the floor, staring at the bag he had thrown to the ground.
At the very top of the bag, a photo frame had fallen out, its glass shattered. A crack ran straight through the middle of the picture of him and Amber.
Now, I no longer felt any comfort.
I knew full well that once, my photos had likely been smashed and replaced in the same way.
Perhaps one day, he would uncover Amber’s true colors.
But, so what? I would never forgive them. There was no going back.
Shane was too exhausted to bother cleaning up. He stepped over the mess on the floor,
collapsed onto the bed, turned off the lights, and prepared to sleep.
He rested his elbow over his eyes, and I couldn’t make out his expression.
I could only see the faint trembling of his shoulders.
In the quiet room, his voice broke the silence. “Ally…“
