Chapter 9
When the car stopped, I snapped back to reality and realized we had arrived at Riverside.
I noticed a Maybach parked nearby where Shane pulled over. Which wealthy person would come to the river in this freezing weather?
Now that I was back at the scene of the incident, a wave of emotions surged within me. I recalled the hopelessness I felt as I dragged my heavy wedding dress along the water’s edge.
Though I hated Shane to the core, years of feelings couldn’t be severed in mere days. When he abandoned me at the altar, I was surprised, angry, and above all, disappointed.
In the end, Shane chose Amber over me. Watching his figure as he walked away had cemented my hatred for him,
I was utterly heartbroken then. I only noticed there was someone behind me the moment they plunged a knife into me. I looked down in time to see the blade pierce through me.
I was stunned. I saw the spot where I fell. Even though I didn’t feel the pain anymore, I instinctively reached for my wound. I had lost a lot of blood last night, but the river had washed it all away.
I scanned the area meticulously. My phone and all of my other belongings were not in the
water.
“Damon, when did you return to the country?” Shane’s voice pulled me from my thoughts.
When I looked up, I saw a man in a wheelchair by the river. A black wool coat was draped over his fair skin, and his features were so strikingly handsome it felt almost otherworldly.
With just one glance, his gaze sent a chill down my spine.
He was the product of Mr. Lundberg Senior’s one–night stand overseas. Inheriting his
mother’s blonde hair and blue eyes, he was a breathtakingly sexy man.
Though Anthony had Damon in his later years, Damon was an illegitimate son. He was hidden from the public and raised abroad, rarely returning to the country.
He was Shane’s uncle, but he wasn’t much older than Shane. He always gave off an air of coldness that never seemed to fade.
I feared him from our very first meeting, but fate had a way of playing tricks. Every time I found myself in a dangerous situation, he was always the one who saved me.
For instance, back then during the tsunami, I had thought I would be dying somewhere in the depths of the ocean when I chanced upon his cargo ship. He had his men rescue me and even sent me back home.
I personally hand–wrote his wedding invitation and carefully selected a thank–you gift before

mailing it to him.
Word was that with his incredible business acumen, he had long separated himself from the Lundberg family and became a rising star in the business scene.
Given his strained relationship with the Lundbergs, I hadn’t expected him to attend our wedding.
Damon looked up lazily, his gaze falling on Shane. “Do I need to report my whereabouts to you?” Damon asked coldly.
Shane also feared this uncle of his. Though he was crippled in the legs, he was brutal in the way he dealt with things.
“Of course not. I was just wondering why you would be here in this biting wind?” Shane voiced my thoughts.
Damon smirked. “I’m wondering the same thing. You just got married, yet you’re out here in the cold wind instead of spending time with your wife?”
“To be honest, Allison has quite the temper and is upset with me right now.”
I caught the ridicule in Damon’s gaze. “She’s not temperamental. She’s just blind. I can’t believe she actually married garbage like you.”
“Damon!” Shane’s expression shifted dramatically, but Damon ignored him.
“Let’s go, Jose.”
The six feet two inches tall man with a scar on his brow pushed Damon’s wheelchair slowly
over the uneven stones.
Clenching his fists at his sides, Shane glared at the back of the wheelchair and said, “Damon, in any case, I’m the one Allison married.”
I blinked in surprise, baffled by Shane’s statement that came from nowhere. I wasn’t even
close to Damon.
