ily Evans! Kidnapping my daughter is a crime!”
Lily let out a smug laugh. “How is this kidnapping? Stephen and I went to pick Nancy up together.”
My anger surged, and I could barely contain it. What are you two planning?”

Chapter 7
“Nothing much,” she said with a mocking tone. “The three of us will be a happy little family from now on.
I gritted my teeth, struggling to keep calm as I tried to reason with her. “Lily, you’re young. Surely you don’t want to be a stepmother. You and Stephen will have your own children one day. Let Nancy come back to me. It’ll be easier for you too.”
Lily snorted. “Being a stepmother isn’t so bad! It’s nice to have someone to vent my frustrations on every day. Nancy is your weakness. As long as I have her, I have control over you.”
I hung up the phone, seething with rage, and immediately called the police.
The next moment, Stephen and Lily swaggered in as if they had nothing to fear.
“Teresa, calling the cops won’t do you any good,” Stephen said, a smug grin on his face.” Nancy is just staying at my parents‘ house. If you want her to be safe and sound, you’d better play nice in front of Dr. Thomas. Make sure Lily and I get the jobs we want, and don’t stand in my way of becoming department head.”
I couldn’t help but laugh in disbelief. “Stephen, are you even human? Teaming up with someone else to go against your own wife and biological daughter?”
“Is Nancy really his biological daughter?” Lily chimed in mockingly, her voice dripping with malice.
“Doesn’t he already know the answer to that?” I turned to Stephen, watching as a flicker of guilt crossed his face.
Once, I stumbled upon a paternity test report tucked away in the nightstand. Stephen had secretly done a test to confirm Nancy was his biological daughter. Clearly, under Lily’s manipulation, his trust in me had long been eroded.
“So, what if she’s my biological daughter?” Stephen said shamelessly, without a hint of guilt. “As her father, she should understand and support me. Nancy will come around.”
I forced myself to stay calm, my
mind racing.
Reasoning with someone like Stephen, a cold–blooded murderer, was futile. He lacked humanity, and logic would never penetrate that void.
“Believing everything Lily said will only lead to regret. Stephen, you know exactly what kind of person she is. Do you really think she’s someone you can rely on?”
Lily had worked tirelessly to drive a wedge between Stephen and me. If she could play that game, so could I.
