Chapter 71
Alexander wrapped his arms around Megan’s waist. He reeked of alcohol, and he acted like a piece of gum that wouldn’t let go. “Meg, I was wrong, alright?”
“What did you do wrong?”
“Whatever you say I did, I did.” He wore a pleasant expression, his tone soft and somewhat flattering as if he was trying to please her. “Don’t shut me out, okay?”
Originally, he was confident she would crawl back at him as long as he didn’t initiate contact. To his utter surprise, she effortlessly lived without him, thanks to her life and status. Indeed,
he had overestimated his value.
He leaned his head on her shoulder, his body tense as he held her. “Don’t leave me. I know I was wrong. We won’t get married and have kids if that’s what you’re against. I’ll do everything
you say.
Megan’s heart softened at his words. For a moment, she felt a rise of sympathy for him.
She gazed quietly at the hazy night and was lost in thought. She asked him, “How long have we known each other, Alexander?”
“More than a decade.”
“I don’t want to waste your time.”
“You’re not.”
“Alex-”
“Hush. Just let me hug you.”
Unfortunately, Catherine was struck with newborn jaundice. For the past few days, Emily had been keeping vigil at the hospital while Angelina could barely sit still at home.
When Chester returned home from the hospital, Angelina’s eyes were teary. “How’s Catherine?
“She’s fine. Don’t worry too much about her.”
“When will she be discharged?”
“A couple more days.”
The family members took turns going to the hospital to keep watch every day, including Isadora. She cleared the work on her hands and prioritized Catherine’s condition.
One day, after pulling an all–nighter at the hospital, she exited the building and ran into
Richard. As if he had been waiting for her, he quickly held her and asked with a look of concern, “Isadora, are you alright?”
“Mr. Lane?” Isadora thought she was hallucinating due to exhaustion. “Why are you here?”
“I heard from your studio that you were at the children’s hospital, so I came to take a look at you. How could they ask a lone girl to keep vigil? Here, I’ve bought you breakfast.”
She found it extremely strange to be receiving such care from a middle–aged man. She looked up at him and replied, “Thanks, Mr. Lane, but I need to get home now.”
“How can you drive after staying up all night? Let me send you home while you have something to eat in the car.”
She thought there was nothing wrong with that.“Will that take up your time, Mr. Lane?”
“Of course not. Is your niece alright?”
“Yeah, she is. Let’s go.”
Isadora was extremely tired. She had a regular routine and rarely stayed up late; whenever she did, she felt dizzy, as if her body were about to collapse.
She yawned non–stop, and after eating a few bites of the breakfast Richard brought her, the sleepiness hit her even harder.
“Why don’t you take a nap, Isadora? I’ll wake you up when we arrive. I bet you’re exhausted after the night at the hospital.”
She wanted to refuse, but her drowsiness got the better of her. “I’ll take a brief one, then. You must wake me up when we’ve arrived, Mr. Lane. Thanks.”
“Okay.”
After some time, Isadora was awakened by her ringtone. She quickly took out her phone and answered the call, “Hello.”
“Where are you?”
She, too, would like to know the answer. She looked around and wondered, “Where is this? This isn’t the road to the suburbs.”
Panic surged, and she glanced at Richard, who was focused on the road. “I’m sending you to my place so you can catch some sleep, Isa. Your home is crowded, and you also told me your sister–in–law adopted a cat. I just want you to have a good rest.”
