Chapter 72
“Isadora?” Chester called out from the other end of the phone.
A nervous Isadora answered, “I’ll explain to you later, Ches.
Once she hung up, she turned to Richard. “I’m not going to your place, Mr. Lane. I’m going
home.”
“You’re just about the same age as my daughter, Isa. What’s there to worry about? Besides, we’ve known each other for so long. Don’t you have any trust in me? I believe you know what kind of person I am.”
She had been thinking how inappropriate it was to go to a married man’s house to sleep, and what he said earlier made her feel even more uncomfortable for some reason. In fact, she had
an unsettling feeling.
She couldn’t help but recall Angelina’s advice and came to a realization. Indeed, Richard. harbored inappropriate thoughts toward her.
Feeling goosebumps trailing on her skin, she stated, “Please stop the car.”
“What’s wrong, Isa? Don’t you trust me?”
“I said, stop the car!”
Even if she hadn’t had such thoughts before, she could no longer view their relationship as that of an elder showing care for a younger person after hearing his words.
Faced with her serious demeanor, Richard stepped on the brake pedal and asked, “What’s wrong with you, young lady?”
Isadora unlocked the door from the back seat and descended the car. “Thanks for driving me, Mr. Lane, but I think we should keep a distance from now on.”
“Isa…”
“That will be all, Mr. Lane. Thanks for your care.
At that, Richard turned frantic. “I didn’t mean it that way by asking you to sleep at my place, Isa! My ex–wife and I have separated for many years. I don’t even have my daughter anymore. I’m childless! Don’t worry about it!”
“Why are you even telling me this?”
The more he attempted to appear innocent, the more inappropriate his intentions became.
Isadora’s brows tightened. Then, Richard laughed. “Oh, Isa. I do like you very much. You’re young and beautiful, but what I feel for you is… Isa…”
She turned around and left, not listening to his remaining words. She immediately stopped a cab. Once she entered, she received a call from Chester. “Where are you? I’ll pick you up.”
“I’ll be home soon.”
“Next time, don’t get into just any car.
“It was Mr. Lane.”
“Did you forget what I told you? Or what Angelina warned you about?”
“I didn’t think it’d be this complicated,” she replied.
“A middle–aged man telling you to sleep at his place. How much more complicated can it get?”
“I was wrong, Ches.”
Truthfully, she had assumed they were overly sensitive and never imagined that beneath Richard’s honest and simple appearance were those filthy thoughts.
As she recalled her recent interactions with him, she couldn’t help but feel revolted.
“Send me your license plate number. I’ll wait for you downstairs.”
When Isadora arrived home, Chester remained quiet and simply walked ahead. She was too embarrassed to say anything and briefly told him about her last few interactions with Richard.
“Ches, I swear I didn’t know.”
“Just go to sleep. You’re lucky you found out in time. From now on, cease all contact with him, “he said.
Tears welled up in her eyes. She nodded lightly and returned to her room, still shaken.
Who knew what might have happened if she hadn’t woken up in time and had been taken to Richard’s place? Just thinking about it sent a chill down her spine.
Meanwhile, Angelina video–called Emily and saw that Catherine’s complexion was not as yellow anymore. She was in a crib placed under blue light, and her little face was now–fair and chubby.
“Everything is fine. You can welcome her home in another two–days.”
“After jaundice, you can’t get sick again. Alright, Catherine?”
After giving birth, Angelina seemed to be wrapped in an indescribable softness. It was hard to associate her with the bold, domineering person she once was. She had become soft and gentle.
When Chester opened the door, it was as if his world had suddenly been illuminated by a beam of light…
