Alexander had some matters to attend to and left with Ryan as soon as the banquet ended.
Megan drove Rosalind to the studio.
Rosalind wore a red dress. She was graceful, striking, and effortlessly elegant. She was one of those people who could look stunning in anything, like a model who effortlessly brings
clothes to life.
With the extra effort she had put into her appearance, she glowed brilliantly, attracting every
gaze.
“Did you see that?” Rosalind asked softly.
Rosalind gazed out the window. “Chester really is a good man. Everyone’s attention was on Catherine, yet his eyes never left Angelina. He took care of her.”
“Shouldn’t that be the way it is?” Megan replied.
A decent man was supposed to behave that way. If not, then he was just a jerk.
Rosalind glanced at Megan. “No, it isn’t how it should be. Many men these days aren’t responsible. The moment a baby is born, they change the way they treat their wives.”
“Is that something Aunt Nora has been telling you again?” Megan asked.
“Partly. But I’ve also seen it in the news.”
Megan pulled up at a red light at an intersection, watching the countdown timer. “Let me remind you. Don’t keep staring at married men. That won’t end well for you.”
“And what if I can’t help it?” she murmured.
Here it was again. Megan looked straight at her. I don’t understand you anymore. Even if you feel you can’t help it, you have to. He is a married man. Don’t you get it?”
“Meg, I don’t know how to explain this to you,” Rosalind whispered.
“You don’t need to. Just remember what I said,” Megan said firmly.
“When I look at Chester, I feel a strange sense of familiarity, as if something is connecting us. I understand what you’re saying, but I can’t resist wanting to be close to him.”
Rosalind had said similar things before, but never this directly. “So what are you going to do? “she asked quietly.
“From what I’ve observed, he and Angelina arent truly in love. He only treats her well because he feels obligated to. If he is this considerate to a woman he doesn’t love, imagine how he would treat someone he genuinely cared for.”

A horn blared from the car behind. Megan drove forward and turned onto a quieter side street.
Autumn was settling in. Many of the food stalls that once sold spicy grilled sausages had packed up, replaced by vendors offering caramel apples and warm pumpkin spice donuts.
The sweet aroma of cinnamon and baked goods filled the car, yet Megan’s gaze remained fixed
on Rosalind.
“What are you planning to do?” she asked.
“Chester is a good man. There’s no point in a marriage without love,” Rosalind said firmly.
“I asked what you plan to do,” Megan repeated.
“He shouldn’t be trapped in such a marriage. He is bound to Angelina by duty alone. His principles won’t let him treat her poorly, especially since she has borne his child. So he has no choice but to be good to her.”
“Rosalind, I’m asking what you are going to do. Stop explaining,” Megan snapped.
Megan’s sudden outburst left Rosalind momentarily speechless.
“Meg…” she began softly.
“Why do you care about their relationship? Are all the men in the world dead or something? I warned you when I first noticed your feelings for Chester. Have you learned nothing?” Megan asked, her voice sharp.
“I’ve never felt this way about anyone before,” she confessed.
“So what? That gives you a right to interfere? Are you trying to be a homewrecker?” Megan demanded.
“No! Don’t dismiss my feelings for Chester with those accusations,” she said, her voice trembling.
Rosalind’s voice trembled with hurt, tears threatening to fall. “Meg, we are best friends. You shouldn’t speak to me like this.”
“This is me being polite. If we weren’t best friends, I’d have slapped you already. I can’t stand homewreckers,” Megan said coldly.
“That’s only because your father betrayed your mother. Chester and I…”
“If you do something like that, we are done. A homewrecker is a homewrecker. Don’t try to sugarcoat it,” Megan interrupted.
Rosalind fell silent, the sting of her words hanging between them.
“Get out of the car,” she ordered.
“What?” Rosalind asked, stunned.

Even though it was technically fall, there was still some lingering heat–an Indian summer- and the sun still blazed fiercely.
“I don’t want to be in the same car with you,” Megan said coldly.
“Meg?” she pleaded.
“Don’t make me say it twice. Get out,” she snapped.
Megan drove off without a second glance, leaving Rosalind standing there, bewildered and
alone. The sun beat down on her, and her elegant dress clung to her as sweat trickled down her
skin.
