Tom’s kick connected, and my head hit the
corner of the coffee table.
Pain exploded in my head and I passed out.
When I woke up, I could hear voices.
“Mom, did you mess with the medication
again? How else would she get pregnant?”
L
“It’s good that I got those pictures of her at
the hotel with a strange man. Tom is sure to
divorce her.”
“Thank God Tom still trust us, it could have
been a great disaster.”
I carefully cracked my eyes open. I was in an
ambulance.
Faye had her back to me, talking to someone
in a doctor’s coat.
It was her mom.
Everything clicked into place.
Tom had said he’d had the check–up at the
biggest hospital in town, the one where

“It’s fine. After this, Tom will definitely divorce
that little brat, and then you two can get.
married, and he won’t need the medication
anymore.”
“Thank God for that medicine. They couldn’t
get pregnant for three years. If not, Tom
would dote on that girl forever.”
Faye sounded all sweet and innocent.
“Oh, Mom, it’s all my fault for going abroad.

“Oh, Mom, it’s all my fault for going abroad.
When I came back, he was already with that
girl.”
“It’s good that you’re here mom, thanks to
you.”
“We can get everything settled while Tom is
driving himself to the hospital. It won’t be
easy to discuss anything with him in front.”
Then I heard them whispering about quick
solutions, like pushing me into the operating
room as soon as we arrived.
I was terrified, but I was still in the
ambulance, so I stayed quiet and made a
plan.

When the ambulance arrived at the hospital,
Tom was already there.
I opened my eyes the moment the ambulance
doors opened and grabbed Tom’s sleeve.
“Tom, I need to talk to you.”
Faye’s mom looked alert and rushed towards
Tom.
“Tom, the operating room is ready.”
“Don’t worry. I got the chief of obstetrics to
do it personally. It’ll be fine.”
“Everyone’s waiting. Let’s go inside.”
She didn’t wait for Tom’s answer and
motioned for the nurses to wheel me into the

I was almost at the operating room. I had to
say something fast.
I gently touched my stomach, then sat up and
yelled.
“Tom, this is our baby. You can’t hurt him!”
“Give me five minutes. I need to talk to you
alone.”
“Tom!”
I was screaming. The nurses stopped the
gurney at the door of the operating room.
Tom walked over, his face pale.
“Say what you have to say here. The doctors
and nurses are waiting. Don’t waste

everyone’s time.”
“If you’re still going to say crazy things about
the baby being mine, don’t bother.”
“Lily, if you have any feelings for me, you
wouldn’t keep disrespecting me like this.”
I grabbed his sleeve, pointing at Faye and her
mom.
“It’s them! They did this!”
“Tom, let’s go to another hospital. Get
another test. You’re not sterile. They’re lying
to you.”
“This is your baby. Tom, you have to believe
me.”

Tom frowned, but Faye cut him off.
“Lily, what are you talking about! Why would
we do this to you and Tom? What would we
get out of it?”
“Besides, you two couldn’t get pregnant for
three years. As soon as another man shows
up, you’re pregnant? Does that make sense?”
“You’re still lying. So, you’re saying we gave
you that other guy?”
Faye’s mom stepped forward, looking firm.
“Mrs. [Tom’s last name]! You can’t say things
like that!”
“I’m the vice president of this hospital. I’ve
been working hard for thirty years. You’re

“If Mr. [Tom’s last name] believes you, then
find someone else, because this surgery is
off.”
Tom didn’t hesitate. He pulled my fingers off
his sleeve, one by one.
I begged him to believe me, but Tom turned
away.
I reached out to him, but before I could touch
him, I heard his voice.
“Take her in for the surgery.‘
“I don’t want the baby.”
