Faye crawled over to my bed and started
banging her head on the floor.
“Lily, please forgive my mom. It’s my fault. I
shouldn’t have had those thoughts.”
“Please, Lily, let my mom go. She’s all I have
left.”
<
“I’ll tell Tom everything. If you let us go, I
promise I won’t bother you and Tom
anymore.”
I stared at Faye, saying each word carefully.
“So, Tom’s sterile diagnosis was fake, and
you gave him medicine so he couldn’t have
kids.”
“What about the phone calls? I called Tom
when my brother came back. Why wasn’t
there a record of it?”
“Tell me everything. You have to tell me
everything.”
Faye cried as she spoke.
“Yes, we did it all. I went to Tom’s office to

give him the medicine on the day you called,
but he was in a meeting.”
“I deleted the calls. His phone password has
always been your birthday.”
“It’s all my fault. Please, let my mom go.”
I was furious, even though I already knew the
truth.
But before I could say anything, a familiar
voice came.
Tom was standing in the doorway, looking
like he might fall over.
“What did you say?”
“Favel What are you saving?”
く
“Faye! What are you saying?”
He charged into the room, grabbed Faye’s
shirt, and pulled her up.
“What are you saying? Lily’s baby was mine?”
“You mean, I’m not sterile? You and your
mom have been lying to me!”
“Why? Why would you do this?”
Tom was screaming.
Before Faye could answer, a couple of cops
came into the room.
They looked around and walked over to
Faye’s mom.
L
“You’re under arrest for multiple financial
crimes.
“You need to come with us.”
Faye shoved Tom away and threw herself at
me, begging.
“We had a deal. I apologized, and you were
going to let us go.”
When I didn’t say anything, she turned to
Michael.
“Michael, I apologized to Lily.”
“You said if I apologized, you would let my
mom go.”
“Please, let her go. She can’t be arrested.
L
Please, Michael.”
Michael threw up his hands, acting helpless.
“It’s too late. The cops are here. What can I
do?”
“The police station isn’t mine. They’re doing
their job. You’re going to make them angry.”
Michael was teasing her, but his words hit
hard.
Faye went white and stopped talking.
I looked at Faye and said, “If you don’t have anything else to say, please leave. I want to
rest.”

“I apologized to you!”
“You said if I apologized, you would let us
go.”
“You’re young. You and Tom can have more
kids. That was just a baby. My mom is a real
person!”
I scoffed, meeting her eyes.
“Michael was right about you.”
“You’re not sorry. You’re just scared.”
“And I never said I would let you go if you
apologized, because you should have
apologized anyway.”
<
As for your mother, she’s an adult. She made
mistake. She has to pay for it.”
Faye started laughing hysterically. Then, she
stopped, pulled out a knife, and ran at me.
“Lily! I’m going to kill you! I’m going to kill
you!”
“It’s all your fault! You stole Tom from me!
You ruined my mom!”
“It’s all your fault! You have to die!”
