Chapter 17
Due to the previous propulsion engine malfunction, Stephen had to work overtime to create a new one.
Others offered to help, but he refused.
This time, he didn’t want to rely on anyone and decided to develop it alone.
For five days straight, Stephen was holed up in the lab, often forgetting to eat or sleep.
But this gave Wayne the opportunity he needed.
Whenever Stephen was absorbed in his work late at night, Wayne would sneak in and turn the air conditioning down to the lowest setting.
Already in a weakened state, Stephen soon developed a high fever.
Still, he remained at his post, knowing this project was a critical test of his abilities since returning to the company.
If he failed, it would be hard to maintain his authority.
He’d always shouldered everything alone.
He had in the past, and he would now.
On the second delivery attempt, Stephen carefully double–checked everything before beginning the demonstration.
Savage had managed to bring back the previous clients with a 10% discount, though they were still hesitant.
But Stephen stepped forward confidently.
“Ladies and gentlemen, to make up for the previous incident, I’m presenting a second–generation upgraded version this time, with enhanced power and reduced noise.”
“I also make a solemn promise: if there are any quality issues, I will immediately resign from the company.”
Hearing his conviction, the clients hesitated but agreed to give it a try.
The next moment…
Whoosh!
The engine powered up, and the test readings stunned everyone.
Not only was this engine faster, but it was also much quieter than the last.
Seeing his true capabilities, the executives were left speechless.
The clients were so impressed they doubled their order on the spot.
As the whole company celebrated, Stephen collapsed from his high fever.
“Stephen!”
Diana rushed to him first, and with everyone’s help, they got him to the hospital.
According to the doctor, Stephen’s condition was serious.
His immune system had weakened from overwork, and his fever wouldn’t go down anytime soon.
Two days later, Diana was in the monitoring room, stressed and exhausted, wondering how she could help Stephen recover faster.
Wayne suddenly approached her, carrying some food.
“Diana, you haven’t eaten in days. Here, this will help you feel better.”
“Take it away. I’m not eating.”
Annoyed, Diana shot him a glance.
Wayne seized the moment. “Come on, this is made from an old family recipe. One bowl, and any illness will be cured.”
Hearing this, Diana looked up. “A cure–all, is it? Give me the recipe.”
All she could think about now was Stephen.
He was so weak; he definitely needed something to boost his strength.
That evening, as soon as she finished work, Diana rushed to the hospital.
She brought a meal she’d prepared herself, using the best ingredients and medicinal herbs she could find.
“Stop.”
Outside the room, Benjamin, on night watch, stubbed out his cigarette. “Why are you here? Stephen doesn’t want to see you.”
“It’s okay. Just give him this food. He looks so weak.”
Chapter 17
Benjamin wanted to refuse, but seeing how Stephen hadn’t eaten well in days, he took the food inside.
Diana waited outside, hoping Stephen would compliment her cooking.
But moments later, Benjamin rushed out.
“Nurse! Nurse! My friend is vomiting–come quickly!”
A few nurses rushed in, and after an examination, they found that Stephen was having an allergic reaction.
Benjamin examined the food closely, and his anger boiled over.
He grabbed Diana by the collar, furious. “Do you not know Stephen is allergic to mushrooms?” “Are you trying to kill him?!”
