Chapter 18
“What? Allergic to mushrooms?”
Diana was stunned, staring helplessly at the piles of mushrooms in the trash bin. “I… I thought they’d be nutritious.“‘
“Do you think you’re being thoughtful?”
Benjamin laughed bitterly. “You’ve known him for twenty years–have you ever actually cared about him?”
“If you’d ever cooked for him, you’d know he’s allergic to mushrooms. Even I know that, but you somehow don’t!”
Diana’s face went pale under his questioning.
At that moment, it felt as if she were being roasted over a fire, the pain piercing her heart.
She finally understood why her good intentions always went wrong.
It was because she’d never truly paid attention to Stephen.
He knew she didn’t eat spicy food, avoided seafood, and was always mindful of her needs during meals.
But she barely knew anything about him—and had nearly put his life at risk.
“I’m so sorry, Stephen!”
Diana’s face was streaked with tears.
She finally understood where she’d gone wrong. Helpless and scared, she could only keep apologizing.
“The patient’s condition is serious; he’s starting to spasm. Bring the oxygen quickly!”
The nurse, frowning, urged them both to leave.
For the next half hour, Benjamin swore until he ran out of words, while Diana felt utterly shattered.
She knelt in repentance outside the hospital room, refusing to move.
“Fortunately, he didn’t swallow much, or it could have led to anaphylactic shock.”
The nurse emerged, giving Diana a stern look. “If you don’t know the patient’s health details, don’t feed them random things. You’d be responsible for the consequences!”
Diana nodded fervently and then rushed back into the room, kneeling in front of Stephen.
He had a few red spots on his face and was staring up at the ceiling.
Benjamin sighed, too exhausted to scold her any longer, leaving it to Stephen to deal with her.
“I’m sorry.”
“No need to apologize to me,” Stephen murmured. “This is just my fate.”
“Don’t say that.”
“It’s all my fault,” Diana said, her voice breaking. “For the past six months, I’ve been reflecting every day. I was such a fool; I took you for granted.”
She slapped herself twice, tears streaming down her face.
“Stephen, you can hit me or curse me–I accept it all.”
“I’m willing to spend my entire life making it up to you.”
Stephen was silent for a few seconds.
“I don’t need that.”
“Leaving me is the best way you can make it up to me.”
Diana knelt for ten more minutes before she managed to stand up.
If he wanted her to go, she had no choice but to leave.
From that day forward, people at the company noticed a change.
Diana no longer visited the Vice President’s office or brought gifts; she focused on her work instead.
But no one knew that, whenever she passed his office, she couldn’t help but glance inside,
When back in the monitoring room, she’d replay footage, watching it from day to night.
One day, Diana went to Wayne’s workstation.
“Diana, what brings you here?” Wayne was thrilled, thinking his plan had finally worked.
She’d finally come to him on her own!
Chapter 18
He felt like his life was about to take a major turn.
“You’ve finally come around, haven’t you, Diana? No matter what others say, I’ll always love you.”
His passionate confession received no response.
Diana opened his drawer and precisely pulled out a black USB drive.
“Wayne, do you have anything to say?”
Her voice was icy, trembling with anger.
Wayne’s expression changed. “I don’t understand what you mean. I just found that USB drive the other day; I haven’t looked at what’s on it.”
