My temper flared as well. “Shaun, if you don’t have enough brain cells to rub together, maybe don’t open your mouth. If I really borrowed money from Cindy, I’d have admitted it. But I didn’t, so I’m not going to admit to what I’ve never done. In fact, I’m going to sue you for defamation!
“And Cindy, don’t think being pregnant makes you untouchable. I won’t let this slide!”
With that, I turned and left. Cindy burst into tears. Shaun chased after me, “Rainey, stop right there!”

I turned and slapped him right across the face. Shocked, he spat, “You dare hit me?”
“Oh, yes, I dare. Are you stupid? Yes, we were together briefly in college, but back then, I had already told you that I didn’t like you. Even when you married Cindy, I’d made it clear that there is absolutely nothing between us!
“If it weren’t for her, do you really think I would’ve even spoken to you? Me? Have a crush on you? What would I even love about you? Your family background? Your stunning personality? Or, I don’t know, your non–existent wealth?
“Think of the time we were together. Had I ever bought anything luxurious? The only luxury bag I own, I bought it with my own hard–earned money. Look. Here are my bank transactions and my credit card statements!
“I’ve even printed every single transaction between Cindy and me. I know you won’t believe me, but anyone with a brain can easily check this out for you. I’m sure you’ll find something if you dig deep enough!
“Lastly, I haven’t finished saying what I needed to say last night. Cindy said her stomach hurt. Tell me, did the doctors find anything when she was rushed to the hospital?
“Sometimes I wonder what’s inside that empty head of yours, Shaun.”
Shaun flushed with anger at my words. He said coldly, “Don’t try and drive a wedge between me and Cindy.”
“You know better than I do whether I’m speaking the truth or not. Before she married you, Cindy was in another relationship. Her ex–boyfriend is still in this city. In fact, he’s working at the gym right across from your house.
“If you still can’t figure it out, then I’ll bring you the evidence myself!
“Oh, and by the way, that man was brought into the police station last night too!”
