He leaped to his feet and roared at Rachel. “Who was here the past two days? Give me a list at once!”
Rachel looked at him calmly, as though she was used to this. “Only the nurses came in, and they left once they gave her the medication. Yesterday, I only dropped by to check on her while you were resting, out of concern for her.
“Mrs. Gayes, you shouldn’t overthink things and focus on recovering. Mr. Gayes is constantly worried about you, you know.”
Rachel sounded like she was playing along, but I could hear her gloating between the lines. I turned my head aside and waved at everyone to leave.
Victor was worried he had not proven his love to me enough, so he took my head and continued, “Nina, you’re my one and only wife. I will love you and only you all my life.”
“Mm-hmm,” I replied calmly. I was tired of his act.
Victor pursed his lips and took a deep breath, as though steeling himself before he spoke slowly. “Nina, I have a meeting I need to attend this week. It was supposed to be today, but I postponed it to tomorrow so I could be with you when you fainted.
“This time I swear I’ll keep my phone on. You can call me whenever you wake up, I’ll pick up in an instant!”
He watched me carefully, afraid he would miss any part of my reaction. Was it because he did not want me to know what he was actually up to, or was he actually afraid of losing me?
I suppressed my anger and disappointment, nodding. “Go and focus on your work. I’ll be fine in the hospital.”
