Chapter 4: Rejection.
Chapter 4: Rejection
(Scarlett’s POV)
I walked back into the courtyard, my steps steady but my blood burning with anger. I felt Cora pacing inside me, bristling at the sight in front of us. The crowd had only grown larger wolves staring with poorly hidden curiosity at Grace.
Grace was crumpled on the ground, her blonde hair flowing messily around her shoulders. She sat in the middle of the pathway as if it were a stage built just for her. Her pale face glistened with well–timed tears, her breathing uneven. She clutched her chest dramatically, as though her frail heart couldn’t endure the invisible agony she pretended to feel.
Jason, Alexander’s loyal beta, was shouting over the onlookers. His voice echoed across the courtyard. “Everyone! Back to work! Now!
Several Omegas hesitated before scurrying off, but many y remained planted in place, their heads swiveling between Grace and me. The tension was nowhere near subsiding, and Jason’s commands seemed powerless against their curiosity.
Then Grace caught sight of me. Her pale blue eyes widened, and with sudden movement, she picked herself up, awkwardly stumbling toward me
She moved as though she were weak and helpless, but I saw the precision in her actions. Every step, every little stumble, was calculated.
Carlett she cried, her voice trembling in just the right way to tug at the heartstrings of the pack members still watching. “Please, you must help
me! I…I have no place to go.”
Confusion hovered in the air, some wolves muttering to each other. I stood there silently, my arms crossed over my chest as her pitiful plea echoed
around me.
“1 promise,” Grace continued, stopping just a foot away. Her small figure trembled, making it clear she wanted everyone to see her as weak and vulnerable, “I won’t interfere between you and Alexander stay out of the way! Just… just let me stay”
I raised an eyebrow at her, not uttering a word. I didn’t trust myself to speak yet, not with the fury bubbling just beneath my skin.
Before I could form a response, Grace suddenly let out a sharp whimper, grabbing her knees.
“My wolf” she gasped loudly, clutching herself tighter as if the p
pain was unbearable. “Her energy it attacked me! I’m–I’m so scared.”
She crumpled to the ground again, folding into herself like a fragile doll. Her voice carried just enough volume to ensure the whole courtyard could
hear her
I hadn’t even moved, and Cora was as calm as she could be, yet Grace was putting on this spectacular act worthy of an award
The whispers around us grew louder. I didn’t have to glance around to know what they were thinking.
She’s so fragile. Look at her. Poor Grace. What a monster, hurting someone so broken.
The bile rose in my throat, but my expression remained cold and unmoving. Grace might be able to fool the pack with her pathetic display, but ! wasn’t blinded by her lies.
Suddenly, a tall, imposing figure came storming into view. Alexander
“Grace” His voice was sharp, louder than all the other noises around us. His expression was tense, a mixture of authority and concern etched into his features. He arrived beside her in seconds, kneeling down to assess the situation.
The way he cradled her frame in his arms made my stomach churn. He held her as if she were the most precious thing in the world, his hands treating her as if she might break at any moment.
“Take her away he barked at Jason, his voice laced with unrelenting command.
Jason nodded immediately, stepping forward to follow his Alpha’s orders. One hand reached out to help, but Alexander didn’t release Grace. His touch was firm, protective.
His Alpha power rippled through the courtyard with his command, making many wolves bow their heads. But not me.
I stood still as stone, my arms crossed tightly as I watched the ridiculous scene unfold. His energy washed over me like a breeze that I didn’t even feel. Cora stirred slightly, amused by the fact that we were completely unaffected by his dominance.

Alexander looked up then, and our eyes met. His amber gaze was intense, full of something unreadable. “Scarlett,” he began, his voice taut. “Come

with me-
I didn’t let him finish. I turned my back on him and strode toward my office, never looking back at the show he so expertly played into
My hands trembled slightly as I grabbed my bag from my desk. I couldn’t tell if it was from the undeniable anger boiling through me or from the
sheer frustration of it all. Maybe both.
I felt his presence at the door before I heard him speak
“Scarlett,” Alexander’s voice filled the room. He sounded tired now, exasperated. “Grace didn’t mean anything by it. Let’s talk.”
I closed my bag deliberately, slinging it over my shoulder before turning to him. My emerald eyes locked onto his, and I saw him falter under my gare.
“Treject any possibility of you becoming my mate,” I said, my voice steady and deliberate.
The air in the room grew still his amber eyes widening slightly in surprise. For the first time, I saw a flicker of something like doubt cross his face,
but he quickly masked it.
His hand reached out, almost instinctively, but I sidestepped him cleanly my movements smooth and calm
“You don’t mean that,” he said, though his tone lacked confidence.
“do” I replied simply, stepping around him with nothing more left to say,
Without another glance in his direction, I walked out of the office and headed to my car
The drive away from the packhouse felt like shedding a suffocating weight.
Cora purred happily inside me, her satisfaction palpable. “We needed that she said, her tone warm and amused. “Did you see his face? He didn’t see
it coming
I stayed silent, my grip tightening on the steering wheel. I wasn’t in the mood to celebrate, at least not yet.
“I do find it funny, though Com continued, her voice filled with mischief. “He can’t find us now. His precious Alpha powers are useless. Poor
Alexander, Probably tearing his hair out trying to track us!”
She
wasn’t wrong. My ability to completely block myself from the pack bond wasn’t something I often used, but moments like these reminded me how powerful it was. My presence was invisible to him now, even with all his commanding strength
“You knew Grace was acting,” Cora growled after a pause. Her voice took on a darker tone, colder. “Playing at being frail again. I hate her games. I
hate her manipulations.”
I didn’t need her to remind me. The scene from the courtyard replayed in my
y mind over and over–the perfect display, the tears, the trembling voice. It
was like watching an old movie I’d seen too many times.
“We’ve seen it before, I muttered aloud, my voice low.
Cora snorted. “Three years ago,” she said bitterly.
I flinched slightly at the memory. That rogue attack she arranged. Just thinking about it made my skin crawl the phantom pain of the injuries returning as if it had happened yesterday.
“No point dwelling on it,” I said, shaking my head as if it could shake the memories away.
“She’ll do it again if she can Cora warned.
1 didn’t reply. I knew.
“Return home immediately.”
Luna Sarah’s voice burst into my mind like an unimited guest.
I clenched my teeth, gripping the wheel tighter as her tone poured through the pack link. It was sharp, commanding, like I was still a child for her to
control

“We need to discuss your behavior,” she added.
Chapter 4 Rejection
“We need to discuss your behavior,” she added.
My lips pressed into a thin line as I raised my mental shields, strengthening the barrier between us, but she kept talking. Her persistence was unbearable.
“Alexander and Grace have history,” she said as though she were explaining something simple to a slow learner. “You need to understand-
I cut her off with a laugh. It wasn’t genuine; it was bitter, harsh, and filled with anger. “Understand what?” I shot back. “How you all protected her after she sent rogues to kill me?”
The silence that followed was deafening, but even then, I knew she wouldn’t let it go.
Her voice softened, turning manipulative, the way it always did when she was trying to be persuasive. “Grace is suffering from silver poisoning,” she said gently, like she was sharing a great tragedy. “The marking ceremony can wait-
I let out a snarl of frustration, cutting her off again.
“Of course,” I snapped. “Delay my marking. Destroy my position. All for precious Grace. The same Grace who tried to have me killed. The same Grace you’ve chosen over me time and time again.”
I severed the mindlink violently, throwing up every shield I had to block her out entirely. The silence that followed was blissful, but it didn’t ease the ache of betrayal that lingered in my chest.
I didn’t wait for her to try again. Instead, I added her mental signature to my blocked list
As I reached the outskirts of the territory, I rolled to a stop near the border. I sat in my car, staring at the endless stretch of road ahead.

was quiet now, but her steady presence gave me an odd sense of calm. I breathed deeply, letting the coolness of the evening air wash over me.
going back. Not this time.
I wasn’t
My phone buzzed then, shaking me from my thoughts. A message popped onto the screen.
It was from Emma,
“Need a drink?” it read simply.
For the first time that day, a genuine smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
I typed back a quick confirmation, establishing a mental link with her immediately after. We set the meeting point–a small tavern in neutral territory.
