Staring at Aaron’s deflated expression, I grew increasingly impatient.
I realized that I had no feelings for him anymore.
Yet, he still shouted in disbelief, “I don’t believe it. We’ve known one another for twelve years and been in a relationship for eight. It’s impossible that you no longer love me!
“Evelyn, are you still angry that I cut your hair before?
“Can you forgive me? I was deceived by Rachel. She was a shameless liar!
“She wasn’t ill at all. Her intention was to separate you from me. I’ve come to my senses now!”
I made attempts to leave, yet Aaron kept blocking my way over and over again.
I was so exasperated that I pushed him away with all my might.
He lost his balance and fell straight to the ground.
“Evelyn, you pushed me?”
“What’s the big deal? You’ve pushed me countless times, haven’t you?”

I clenched my teeth and yanked off my head cap, exposing the
hair roots.
“Aaron, look! This is your handiwork. It was you who brought your friends together to cut my hair!
“You are well aware that I cherish my hair as much as my life itself, yet you still went ahead and did this! In the past, when my family cut my hair and I was being bullied by my classmates, it was you who stood up for me. But now, you’ve turned into the very person who has hurt me!
“I ceased loving you the moment you cheated on me, had my hair cut off, and without a second thought, suspected me of being the culprit.
“If you keep harassing me, I will call the police. I’m not kidding around. And don’t forget, you once used 400 thousand dollars to compromise with me for Rachel before.”
Aaron left in depression.
But I never could have anticipated that Aaron would be so revolting. He actually set his sights on my family.
When I was busy working, my colleagues told me that my family had come.
I came to the office and met my parents and younger brother who I hadn’t seen for a decade.

My parents had aged, yet their unkind dispositions remained plainly evident.

In the solitary chair sat my younger brother. Weighing 220 pounds, he was so obese that the chair he was in seemed on the verge of giving way at any moment.
I stared at the three of them with disgust and remained silent.
In an instant, my mother became elated and clung to me tightly with her hands, which were as rough as the bark of a tree.
“Evelyn, my dear, I finally see you.
“Throughout these years, I’ve missed you intensely. We’ve been looking for you, wondering how you’re doing.”
I withdrew my hand with an expressionless face.
“As you all know now, I’m not doing well.
“You guys can leave now.”
My father complained, “We just met, but you’re eager to drive us away. How can you be so cruel to your parents? Hurry up and arrange a nice hotel for us. We’ve gone through so much trouble to find this place, and we haven’t had a good meal yet!”
“Who asked you to come here?”
I immediately became alert.

However, my parents panicked and shut their mouths.

1 sneered, “Well, since you are unwilling to tell me, get out of here. Considering what you have done to me, you don’t deserve a nice hotel or a good meal.”
As soon as I finished speaking, my brother rose to his feet.
“Who else would it be? It’s none other than your boyfriend.
“If it hadn’t been for him, I truly wouldn’t have known that you were here.
“Anyway, I am starving. I want to live in a hotel, cat a big meal, and buy an iPhone!”
Upon hearing these words, I felt a sense of revulsion, as if I had swallowed some flies.
Aaron, you are so shameless.
Looking at the rowdy trio in front of me, I slowly calmed down.
Evelyn, don’t be afraid. You’re not that old self anymore.
I explained patiently, “It’s useless for you guys to come to me. Do you think I am rich now?
“You should turn to the one who sent you guys here. Instead of causing trouble for me, why don’t you ask him for money? After all, he’s the owner of a company and is rolling in wealth!

“Did he simply have you come over without providing you with any benefits?
“I’ve been with him for eight years. No matter what you request of him, you deserve it.
“What’s more, I’ve been arguing with him lately. He’s been unfaithful to me. If I get back together with him so readily, won’t I be swayed by him easily in the future?”
With a few casual remarks from me, these three scurried away without a moment’s hesitation, as if they’d discovered a new benefactor.
That evening, Aaron happily contacted me.
“Evelyn, if you’re in need of money, just let me know. Why on earth did you ask your parents to go over? I’ve already transferred them a million dollars as an engagement gift. So, when are you planning to return? We should prepare for our wedding.”
“Aaron, I never said that I wanted to marry you.”
Aaron was anxious.
“You didn’t want to marry me. But then, why did you send your parents to hit me up for money? Evelyn, money doesn’t come that easily. I’m sure you know what I mean.”
“Do you mean to buy me?”

Aaron repeated what he had just said.

I laughed in exasperation, “You should go after whoever took your money. Why are you harassing me? I’m a human being, not a pet to be bartered with!”
After hanging up, I went straight to the police station with the recording.
Due to the involvement of a dispute regarding the
one–million–dollar sum, the police soon arrived at the door for an investigation. Eventually, they ascertained that I had ended my relationship with Aaron half a year ago.
Meanwhile, he harassed me several times. He even contacted my parents, who had abused me, and had them come to my door to force and intimidate me.
The police determined that this was a premeditated plan to coerce a marriage.
Aaron was arrested in front of everyone in the company.
When the police found my family, they had already squandered most of the one million dollars on food, drinks, and shopping
sprees.
They firmly refused to return the rest.
The police had no choice but to send them to prison.

Everything came to a close.
I resigned and changed my name.
Using my savings along with the compensation I had got from Aaron, I purchased a house in a small seaside town and led a carefree life.
